Cloitre de Cadouin, Cadouin

3.5
#16 of 39 in Historic Sites in Dordogne
Built in the 12th century and renovated in the 15th, Cloitre de Cadouin represents a Gothic architectural gem. For centuries, monks here devoted their lives to prayer and hosted the shroud of Cadouin, long believed to have been the cloth placed on Jesus' face after his crucifixion. In the past, pilgrims visited and venerated this cloth, believed to possess healing properties. Today, you can tour the cloister and visit a reproduction of the shroud. An exceptional Cistercian cloister. But it must take a lot of time, do not be accompanied by children, and at least be informed. For this the best is probably to rent the remarkable audio quality by design, its cultural and scientific richness on the structures of this cloister. Otherwise we don't understand and that remains only a pleasant walk in a lovely place, rarely quiet since the tourists did not understand that we should avoid talking in a place that resonates and that deserves a fine attention to detail. We'll meet as the ship of fools that Aristote overlapped by galante lady that a superb group of Samson and Delilah to give but a few examples. Lovers of art, religious art and history, not to be missed under any circumstances.

Very nice place to visit. The cloister is beautiful and has a real architectural interest. The guided tour (an hour) is interesting but almost exclusively oriented to the cloister itself and not of the old Abbey.

The cloister is very nice but not worth the price of admission which quite expensive (7 euros) to only see the bottom of the Abbey.

Entry fee is ridiculously high, but you soon discover this place has a long history of fleecing tourists.

The cloisters are always little bits of tranquility. This one is particularly beautiful and peaceful. Of beautiful fairly well preserved bas-relief and the famous fake shroud bonus, funny story! The entry is quite expensive anyway (€7 adults), I do think that the tour is frankly necessary, you are provided with paper documents at the entrance + Wikipedia or the audio guide to download on AppStore or Playstore. Don't miss it in any case!
