Basilique Saint Julien de Brioude, Brioude

4.9
Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, Basilique Saint Julien de Brioude is the largest Romanesque basilica in Auvergne. Unlike other Auvergne churches, this basilica does not have massive oblong architecture; instead it has ornamental windows (replaced by contemporary stained glass due to their loss during the revolution) that are rare for major area churches becauss they are bay-blind framed to form triplets. Look for the beautiful exterior mosaic made of multicolored stone rosettes on the walkways and building exterior. The interior has beautiful polychrome gray, red, white, and black sandstone and marble from nearby quarries, diverse Chapiteaux (flared columns), Gothic statues and furniture, as well as wall paintings from the 12th and 13th centuries. • The Romanesque church, began in late 11th and complete in the 12th century, is of great proportions. Later, during the Gothic period, the nave was greatly elevated, with rib vaults and large Windows, introducing vertical momentum and unusual brightness in a church that essentially preserves the Romanesque font. The stained glass (not) make filter a multicolor light which, although somewhat disturbing the purity of the structure, on the other hand introduces in the sober structure some sort of joyfulness. Considerable imaginative typically Romanesque capitals. A real Pearl are the paintings of the 13th century holding times and walls of the chapel on the South side of the stands above the narthex. Are partially visible from below, but it is important to get on the Forum to observe them closely throughout and to enjoy an exceptional view of the nave, the capitals and the floors of the aisles in the mosaic of white and black stones. It is reached by a narrow staircase to a small door on the left of the narthex. We found open because other visitors had procured the key. If you find it closed worth researching for its procurement. Outside, the facade (and Bell Tower) are 19th century, while passing on the back of the Church, 12th century apse is remarkable. The collection for a monument to be missed, at the cost of making even a long detour.

  • A fine example of Romanesque architecture with its many capitals, the statue of the Virgin and the child to the bird and that of the Virgin parturiante

  • This is a rather unusual and very interesting basilica. I loved the many beautiful stone sculpted ornaments, both outside and inside. But there is a lot more to the building that makes it worth a visit. Was very surprised this location was not mentioned in the popular travel guide that I use 😉
  • Great little basilica, with impressive glass works
  • Just magical, especially at night. Remarkable Basilica of multiple colors. Interior paintings are amazing. Don't miss.

  • Auvergne Romanesque school XI - XIII ° with polychrome volcanic rocks and its roof of varnished to the Burgundian tiles. Do not forget the elegant pavement of the sixteenth. A marvel! 3 stars in the Green Guide Michelin.
