Basilique Saint Julien de Brioude, Brioude
(4.9/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, Basilique Saint Julien de Brioude is the largest Romanesque basilica in Auvergne. Unlike other Auvergne churches, this basilica does not have massive oblong architecture; instead it has ornamental windows (replaced by contemporary stained glass due to their loss during the revolution) that are rare for major area churches becauss they are bay-blind framed to form triplets. Look for the beautiful exterior mosaic made of multicolored stone rosettes on the walkways and building exterior. The interior has beautiful polychrome gray, red, white, and black sandstone and marble from nearby quarries, diverse Chapiteaux (flared columns), Gothic statues and furniture, as well as wall paintings from the 12th and 13th centuries. • Very beautiful Romanesque Basilica with beautiful frescoes in the chapel of st Michel (ask for the key at the tourist office). Do not miss seeing the bedside with polychrome stones and very many carved characters.
