(4.7/5 based on 15 reviews on the web)
Mont Chaberton is a 3131m peak in the French Alps in the group known as the Massif des Cerces in the département of Hautes-Alpes.Chaberton is in the municipality of Montgenèvre in the Briançonnais region. It is easily recognisable by its pyramidal shape and flat top.HistoryUntil 1947 Mont Chaberton was in Italy, located in the municipality of Cesana Torinese. In 1883 Italy joined the Triple Alliance and started strengthening its defences against France. Between 1898 and 1910 Italian troops built an artillery battery on the summit that pointed towards France, in particular at the town of Briançon, and the pass to Italy over the Col de Montgenèvre. A road was built to the summit from the village of Fénils in the Susa Valley by soldiers and engineers led by Major Engineer Luigi Pollari Maglietta. They flattened to summit by about 6 metres to provide a surface for the eight towers. Their height of 12 metres was designed to overcome the highest snowfall recorded. Each emplacement was manned by seven men, who were protected by a relatively lightly armoured dome because the battery was thought to be out of reach of conventional artillery. Eight 149mm guns were mounted in the individual masonry towers. The fort was dubbed the "Fort of the Clouds" because it was often hidden in the clouds.

  • When you are preparing x ascent and you see it at the bottom and a show x the occhi.non you know what awaits the top but you're already excited!!! up to half the path and fairly simple but from then on it becomes really challenging. the fatigue is felt but the scenery around you makes you forget the fatigue and makes you only imagine what you'll see when you arrive at the top you get to the top. seems to touch the sky with your finger the view and spectacular and you remain speechless until you realize you do you have made it alone with your strength ... a wonderful experience!!!

  • Tiring and long climb but worth between history and nature there is enhanced, it is not a simple hike. ... But it's worth it, amazing view ... And it's exciting to think of soldiers who built the military settlement!

  • accessible ballad, the climb to the col is a little harsh but it happening, however after until the many strong Italians (family, cycling, dogs etc...) that access by the other side. To spend a 3000 and of course for the panorama
