Mont Chaberton is a 3131m peak in the French Alps in the group known as the Massif des Cerces in the département of Hautes-Alpes.Chaberton is in the municipality of Montgenèvre in the Briançonnais region. It is easily recognisable by its pyramidal shape and flat top.HistoryUntil 1947 Mont Chaberton was in Italy, located in the municipality of Cesana Torinese. In 1883 Italy joined the Triple Alliance and started strengthening its defences against France. Between 1898 and 1910 Italian troops built an artillery battery on the summit that pointed towards France, in particular at the town of Briançon, and the pass to Italy over the Col de Montgenèvre. A road was built to the summit from the village of Fénils in the Susa Valley by soldiers and engineers led by Major Engineer Luigi Pollari Maglietta. They flattened the summit by about 6 metres to provide a surface for the eight towers. Their height of 12 metres was designed to overcome the highest snowfall recorded. Each emplacement was manned by seven men, who were protected by a relatively lightly armoured dome because the battery was thought to be out of reach of conventional artillery. Eight 149mm guns were mounted in the individual masonry towers. The fort was dubbed the "Fort of the Clouds" because it was often hidden in the clouds.

  • Beautiful trekking, very lucrative, the Summit dominates the whole area and it shows up to Mont Blanc. We climbed from Clavière in October, in a perfect day and already snow on the ground in the final stretch. Breathtaking the huge parade at the top especially if it thinks about the job that required ... Too bad the Summit there has been "stolen" and that the French did not take care of the battery, a masterpiece of military architecture.

  • When you are preparing x ascent and you see it at the bottom and a show x the occhi.non you know what awaits the top but you're already excited!!! up to half the path and fairly simple but from then on it becomes really challenging. the fatigue is felt but the scenery around you makes you forget the fatigue and makes you only imagine what you'll see when you arrive at the top you get to the top. seems to touch the sky with your finger the view and spectacular and you remain speechless until they realize that there l've made it alone with your strength ... a wonderful experience!!!

  • Attraction to reach both from the French side and the Italian. The climb from the Italian side through what remains of that is very long but softer. The climb to Montgenevre is certainly the best way for those who have trained, shorter and more challenging. From the top the view is amazing and the Fort is a beautiful example of military architecture

  • TIRING to get in MTB but doable with a worthy workout! From Italian, after "the split Rock" and ca. 2 km from the Summit there is a sudden exposed where it is advisable for the crossing be accompanied. If you resist the tough ascent to the ' window ', the next ascent is smooth and easy: get to the top is a nice way of the cross! Met the junction of batteries is made: 💯 meters and you have arrived! 🎆🏆 don't forget water, food is to cover yourself well (the Summit is always very breezy). UNIQUE VIEW! 😍
