Monastère Royal de Brou, Bourg-en-Bresse
(4.6/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Monastère Royal de Brou is the burial place of French royalty, and the architecture of this structure recalls the ghosts of the royal personages enclosed in its crypts. You will discover an extravagant Gothic church with a mosaic tiled roof as the centerpiece of the monastic grounds. The church was commissioned in the 16th century by Maragaret of Austria, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian. In 1922, the municipality installed an art collection in the monks' former quarters, where artwork from the 13th to the 20th century adorn the Renaissance walls.  Make Monastère Royal de Brou a centerpiece of your Bourg-en-Bresse vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Bourg-en-Bresse family vacation planner.

  • Amazing architectural discovered thanks to the Lyon Contemporary Art Biennial where exhibitions are sometimes held in the cloister and other rooms, as well as in the Church... Full architectural complex which offers a true encounter between past and present both it is well preserved and especially implemented value... Amazing succession of cloisters and floors where are distributed works old and contemporary creations... The pleasure increased thanks to the possibility to mount in the loft and discover the magic of the place and flamboyant art. I was personally very touched by the reason for building this set related to the European royal families of the time and above all to the romanticism of the members of these families "already" degenerate...
