(4.6/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Known locally as ‘Fort Du Chapus’, the Fort Louvois was constructed between the years 1691 and 1694 during the reign of Louis XIV. The fort is approximately 400 meters (1,300 feet) off the nearest shore. The Fort saw its first action towards the tail end of World War II and needed intensive restoration post the war. Tourists can partake in an exhibition that describes the fort’s history or indulge themselves at an oyster farming museum also located here. The fort itself is in the shape of a horse-shoe. • For fans of military architecture (including own to Vauban), as for those who are looking for a beautiful panoramas and views, this fort is to visit. At the entrance of Oleron, he offers a perspective on the island and makes you understand its strategic interest in the defence of the military port of Rochefort under the kingship.

  • Visit at low tide, like that we were able to walk. Only downside, once got there we cannot enter for free, but we still see a good part of the inner courtyard.

  • Good to see!
  • Very beautiful fort! It can be accessed by boat or on foot. Very well renovated after a German bombing in 1944.

  • A remarkable place to visit. We walked along the passage that you find at low tide. The time was at 10:30 and at 10:15, the Fort was still isolated. Then, slowly, is magically revealed the pass which allowed us to reach the Fort on foot: at 10:30 we were at the entrance! The Fort has been restored with a remarkable result, well worth a visit. An unforgettable experience.
