Trip Planner: Europe / France / Nouvelle-Aquitaine / Charente-Maritime / Marennes / Bourcefranc le Chapus / Fort Louvois
Known locally as ‘Fort Du Chapus’, the Fort Louvois was constructed between the years 1691 and 1694 during the reign of Louis XIV. The fort is approximately 400 meters (1,300 feet) off the nearest shore. The Fort saw its first action towards the tail end of World War II and needed intensive restoration post the war. Tourists can partake in an exhibition that describes the fort’s history or indulge themselves at an oyster farming museum also located here. The fort itself is in the shape of a horse-shoe.
