Tour Pey-Berland, Bordeaux

4.4
Architectural Building · Hidden Gem · Church
Built by one of the great archbishops of Bordeaux in the 1440s, Tour Pey-Berland was supposed to house the bells for St. Andre's cathedral to protect the building from vibrations. However, the bells never came. The tower ended up being used for housing and later was a shotgun pellet factory. In 1851, it was restored, and three bells that are controlled from the cathedral were installed. Today, you can tour the tower, visit its collection of bells, and take in the view of the city from the top of the tower. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Bordeaux holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Tour Pey-Berland and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This is an impressive bell tower dating back to the 15th century. Interestingly the tower was not used for its intended purpose until late in the 18th century, as the church could not afford to get...  more »
  • Like many of similar "tall structures", it's a hike to get to the top. But the views are well worth it - especially given that most buildings in the city are limited to 6 stories so you are towering.....  more »
  • There are 233 steps before you can scale the summit. Children are free and it cost €6 per adult. The views from the top are breathtaking and you can go to two levels. Worth a visit if you are in...  more »

  • Place to visit of you are thinking to visit Bordeaux. It's in the city center nearby the town hall. Very clean and elegant, the moment showed how the city has been changed during the centuries.
  • Must visit - I’m non EU - it just doesn’t matter (to me!!!). Fantastic history, superlative experience- spectacular aerial view. Can’t go wrong, if you are ABLe to climb, whatever the number of steps there are....
  • Incredible view at the top of the tower! It blew me away how beautiful the city is. A must-see Bordeaux attraction. And it's free for EU residents who are 18-25.
  • Mildy difficult climb due to the narrow steps, especially if there are a lot of people that day. But definitely worth the view.
  • You go up a seemingly infinite tight staircase, passing by some locked doors with occasional peek at some bells, to arrive at a first platform with interesting history about all the monuments you can see in a 360° range. The second platform is a few meters above. Both give a very nice and unique view of the city !
