The largest city square in Europe at 126,000 sq m (31 acres), Quinconces Esplanade (Esplanade des Quinconces) is the most important public transport hub in Bordeaux. Come here to take a tram, bus, shuttle, or coach--or just to see the amazing sculptures and monuments, some dating from the early 1800s. These artworks include, among others: two 1829 rostral columns that are 21 m (69 ft) tall and symbolize commerce and navigation; the 1858 white-marble statues of the famed French philosophers Montaigne and Montesquieu; the Girondists monument that was erected in the memory of those killed during the Revolution’s Reign of Terror; and statues dedicated to the Eloquence, the Republic, and Liberty. It is wide, too wide, with a monumental column that doesn't interest than its size... They do not shine by their fineness of evocation as allegories that surround the column... For an ostentatious amateur Grand it must be the end of the end... For lovers of small alleys winding and quiet go your way...

One of the largest places of France with the famous column of Gironde, and around a splendid fountain and its mythical horses-sirens

A beautiful salade nicoise and caesar for Joanne. Excellent! Amongst the best I have eaten. Creme Brulee to follow I was impressed. Overall, a very pleasant experience.

A really large glass of white Bordeaux for only 5 euros, sauvignon worth a little more. The Art deco style would need refreshening but it remains charming though.

Not expensive for the zone, but neither very good food not service.

Where to stay in Bordeaux

Most hotels in Bordeaux sit conveniently located a stone's throw away from the train station. Look to Quinconces Square and Gambetta Square for high-end hotels. Those who prefer more budget-friendly accommodations may want to seek out a youth hostel--a relatively recent addition to the city. To secure a spot here, make sure to book ahead of time. In addition to hotels and hostels, choose from guest rooms in a typical Bordeaux house, or a family-friendly beachside campsite.
