The largest city square in Europe at 126,000 sq m (31 acres), Quinconces Esplanade (Esplanade des Quinconces) is the most important public transport hub in Bordeaux. Come here to take a tram, bus, shuttle, or coach--or just to see the amazing sculptures and monuments, some dating from the early 1800s. These artworks include, among others: two 1829 rostral columns that are 21 m (69 ft) tall and symbolize commerce and navigation; the 1858 white-marble statues of the famed French philosophers Montaigne and Montesquieu; the Girondists monument that was erected in the memory of those killed during the Revolution’s Reign of Terror; and statues dedicated to the Eloquence, the Republic, and Liberty.   • Although it is said it is the widest in Europe square, it has greater interest. Stands the monument to the Gironde of 1895, 48m free Bronze column. On the sides, Montaigne and Montesquieu (Domenico Maggesi 1858) and together garona two columns of 1829.

  • This fountain is a must on the Esplanade of the Quinconces. It represents a tribute to the Girondins and the Republic. The sculptural Pieces that decorate her are wonderful! Each bronze is symbolic. At the top of the column, the genius of liberty.
