The largest city square in Europe at 126,000 sq m (31 acres), Quinconces Esplanade (Esplanade des Quinconces) is the most important public transport hub in Bordeaux. Come here to take a tram, bus, shuttle, or coach--or just to see the amazing sculptures and monuments, some dating from the early 1800s. These artworks include, among others: two 1829 rostral columns that are 21 m (69 ft) tall and symbolize commerce and navigation; the 1858 white-marble statues of the famed French philosophers Montaigne and Montesquieu; the Girondists monument that was erected in the memory of those killed during the Revolution’s Reign of Terror; and statues dedicated to the Eloquence, the Republic, and Liberty. • In the continuity of the visit the place is splendid. Close to the tram and city center and from the dock to the edge of the Garonne.

  • What a beautiful place to go walk quietly under the trees, and when we visited, there was a circus installed. Do not forget to visit the Monument to the Girondins, a must for the child in us
