Bonifacio Citadel, Bonifacio

(2,000+ reviews on the web)
Historic Site
Built in the 9th century, Bonifacio Citadel is located on a sandstone promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Today, it is more like a museum or a mini village packed with sun-bleached ramshackle houses. Walk the narrow passages to view artisans forging knives and carving wooden goods, and jewelers offering fashions made with the remarkably deep red coral indigenous to the area. Many restaurants, shops, and cafés line the walkways with outdoor seating areas overlooking the Mediterranean. Stroll the maze of alleyways with decorations and designs that go back to medieval times complete with a historical marine cemetery. • The Citadel is built on a Cape dominating the mouths of Bonifacio between Corsica and Sardinia, from the top of a limestone cliff of 70 meters. Some homes are literally suspended above the sea, adding to the drama of the site... Bonifacio takes its name from Boniface II, marquis of Tuscany. She was the object of a war between Pisa and Genoa to govern this citadel, King Alfonso V of Aragon made a seat for 5 months in 1420, and the plague in 1528 was particularly devastating. It is with François I the french rebuilt the depopulated city that was ceded to the Republic of Genoa, before Corsica becomes French in 1767. The natural reserve of the mouths of Bonifacio is intended to preserve a unique heritage: sublime landscapes, caves, Marine Park, historical monuments, picturesque alleys and military fortress of Bonifacio make this city an exceptional site.

  • Can't come without a step to Bonifacio in Corsica of the South. And, to organize themselves to be on the site soon enough to find a parking spot. In April no worries because the crowd is low, but in summer it can get quite complicated I think for parking. What is amazing to Bonifacio is the breathtaking view of the Mediterranean with Sardinia in the background on one side and the gully on the other side where the port is located. It must absolutely visit the bastion and the stairs of the King of Aragon. You will also find a building where Napoleon BONAPARTE lived. You can also wander the alleys, but personally I find that the buildings are not enough maintained to make the unforgettable visit. Too bad.

  • A nice tour in the middle of little alley. Seen on Sardinia on one side and the Harbour on the other. The marine cemetery with these beautiful surroundings.
