A military complex of 93-acres constructed between 1685 and 1689 to protect Bordeaux from attacks, Citadelle de Blaye overlooks the Gironde estuary. The walled city, built around a former monastery, includes several army barracks, as well as the 12th-century Rudel Castle, 12th-century Liverneuf Gate, and 15th-century Eguillette Tower. Guided tours explain the architecture of the site, as well as the defense system and how it was used.   • A friendly guide: Tim who explained the history of the Citadel through the underground. We have learned its uses during the many conflicts with the English and the Germans become since our European partners... until now.

  • Very nice for the sunset. Small walk (7 min) required. Above, there are some small shops, 2 restaurants, a hotel and 2 Cafés.
