Paroisse Saint Nazaire, Beziers

Must see · Architectural Building · Religious Site
A Roman Catholic cathedral dating from the 13th century, Paroisse Saint Nazaire resembles a Gothic-style fortress, including square towers and fortified walls replete with gargoyles, wrought iron gates, and a decorated facade. Enter to see the interior's columns and Romanesque capitals, friezes, Gothic windows, statues, and an altar in polychrome marble. Also look for the six large paintings inside--three depicting scenes from the life of Moses and three showcasing scenes from the life of Constantine and his mother, Saint Helena. Some walls are partially covered in ancient frescoes, which were damaged at one time and then partially restored. • The city center is small and has certain charm, but don't expect much apart from the nice shots of the cathedral + bridge. If you happen to wander off the few main streets, the city is unfortunately.....  more »
  • Entry is free to this splendid medieval cathedral, with its impressive gothic /baroque architecture, and still in daily use. The paintings, gargoyles and frescoes contribute to the understated...  more »
  • This is such a beautiful Church steeped in history. Although it is situated at the top of a hill, it is fairly easy to access from the town. Admission is free (there is a donation box) and it is...  more »
  • A lovely building with a history. Beware the bell tower steps. 168 up and 168 down. No handrail and the steps serve both ways. Great view but hard work to get up if you're elderly or not fit! There is a quick way down but I didn't use it ;)
  • Internally the cathedral is beautifully decorated with an impressive organ and series of ornate statues. Externally, the overall design is impressive to look at, however, the view outside the cathedral is what makes it brilliant. You can see the whole surrounding area for miles around which looks beautiful especially if you are there in the evening where the sunset is amazing
  • This is a beautiful and ancient cathedral at the centre of Beziers. Its situated on top of a hill with fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the river Orb. We weren't able to go inside as it was under renovation but there is a lovely square at the side which visitors are free to roam around. Well worth a visit.
  • An absolute stunner this one, and that's saying something given the wide array of cathedrals in France. More access is given in this cathedral than in most places, so you can visit the roof and the cloisters. The sculpture at the front is particularly noteworthy, totally unlike anything I've seen elsewhere.
  • Climbed the tower and had wonderful views of Beziers. The organ and chancel are superb.
