  • I had the chance to visit these arenas with 2 excellent guides, retirees, passionate about the history of their city. I found myself interested in the history of this monument (yet dedicated to bullfights to which I do not necessarily agree), and I even want to go see a show someday. Go also to the view of the city from the top of the arena: just beautiful, we see even the sea in the distance.

  • After the fire of the arenas in wood from the Palazy field on Sunday, September 6, 1896 by a named Arthur, Mr Fayot, Director of the arenas of Nîmes, in November 1896, meets the Mayor of Béziers Alphonse Mas to share a project of construction of arenas with a capacity of 12500 or even up to 15000 spectators on the current location, the plateau of Valras. An agreement of construction with two manufacturers and financial biterrois MM Gleizes and Saltar. Work begins on Monday, January 18, 1897. If a sector of the arenas are wooden, the speaker and a large part of the shelves - stones, bricks, cement - are completed to allow "a bullfight of muerte" before the Bullfight of inauguration scheduled for July 11, 1897, with 6 toros of the small-Badon on 27 June and 4 July 6 toros Viret. Opening July 11, 1897 at 4 o'clock in the afternoon has, in the face of 6 toros of Enrique de Salamanca, Reverte matadors and Algabeno who will be also on 14 July. 1897 see still four bullfighting shows with the big Lagartijillo, Gueritta... 1898 season starts on April 24, includes six bullfighting: 29 may, 19 June, 2 July, 9 October and 23 October interspersed a horse show and a bullfight on 18 September of two becerradas... "And the lyrics in all of this?" Let the pen to him who was the initiator and patron Castelbon de Beauxhostes: 'it was during a trip to Valencia (Spain) that the idea came to me to organize a representation in the arenas of Béziers. I was naturally at the inevitable running of the bulls; He was given also to hear a vocal and musical concert that amazed me. In arenas (...) impeccably resolved choirs and soloists to the voice harmonious came, alone and deliciously, to disturb the silence of the amphitheatre, however trimmed until the lower tier. (…) I had more rest a real trial have been tempted... ». It only remained that in Castelbon de Beauxhostes to convince Camille Saint-Saëns, which was made in arenas one evening in May 1897... and on August 28, 1898 opera Deianira was given. It was also this year there Castelbon de Beauxhostes, aficionados, suggested to create the company Tauromachique of Béziers ancestor of the Union Taurine Bomba. Management and financial difficulties to complete the arena of Béziers, led on 6 October 1898, the commercial court to dissolve the Corporation George-Saltar-Fayot. Castelbon and other shareholders, including the city of Béziers, providing their financial assistance, allowed in the years that followed the architect Carlier of the work - including those of the lodges - to complete the arena in 1901. From June 1897 to 1911 the i. attended including 70 bullfighting shows - becerradas, bullfights, novilladas, Provençal and Landes races; in 19 operas; in a hunt in March 1904. a show of the "Folies Bergères"... Not to mention a meeting unitaitre of the Socialists on April 30, 1905 with Jaurès, Jules Guesdes, Viviani, Cachin and July 2, 1905 a rally of disgruntled growers. During the revolt of 1907 southern winemakers hebergerent arenas a regiment of Dragons... After 1911 arenas were some vicissitudes (14/18 war, defects...). It was same question in 1912 to destroy them. Fortunately in 1919, thanks to the active steps of bullfighting society, MM Azaïs and fellow President of the Chamber of commerce, was created the real estate company of arenas, to find in mid-May 1921, a plazza reclamation and completed. A second inauguration took place on 29 May 1921 with the maestros Luis Freg, Saleri II and Limean facing 6 toros of Veragua. If Castelbon de Beauxhostes, enlightened patron, aficionado, secular and leftist, loving culture of popular education, allowed Béziers to become a time "a french Bayreuth", the initiators of the arenas allowed as Béziers was a time "the French Seville.
