The Château de Belcastel is a medieval castle in the village and commune of Belcastel, in the Aveyron département of France. It is situated above the north bank of the Aveyron River, downstream from RodezThe oldest part of the castle was constructed in the 9th century, and it grew in the hands of the Belcastel family. Later, for many decades, it was the seat of the famed Saunhac family. The Château de Belcastel was officially declared a historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture in 1928. The famous French architect Fernand Pouillon (1912-1986) discovered the castle in ruins in 1974. Pouillon decided to reconstruct the fortress, which had been abandoned since at least the 17th century. Pouillon himself undertook the restoration by hand, along with the help of a dozen Algerian stonemasons, and 10 stained-glass experts. The work lasted only eight years and called for great courage from him and his colleagues, due to the size of the undertaking, the castle's dangerous location, and the fact that no machines were used in the daring reconstruction.Pouillon also undertook the restoration of the village, which is now recognised with the award of the title of one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages in France").Today, the castle is owned by a young American couple, fine art gallery owners in New York, who continue to open the site to the public from early April to mid-November. The castle has a permanent and growing collection of medieval armour, as well as temporary exhibitions of painting and sculpture.

  • It is a beautiful village that awaits you over the water. It is beautifully restored and preserved as the castle which dominates and I urge you to visit.

  • One of the few castle having kept furniture and armor of era, a nice long enough and interesting tour. The restoration by the architect gave this Castle a brand stamp, for my part I just found it strange collection part which slightly distorts the historical part of the place. It is if you like the story and the price is not necessarily excessive

  • Very disappointed. 80% of the castle is private! Visit boils in 2 very small rooms and a small empty Chapel and without no ornament. Regular and enjoying visits to castles, I assure you that his visit has no interest. It is even the first time I'm disappointed from a visit to Castle. Then 7, 5 euros for a tour of 20 minutes... Rather enjoy the Castle from the outside as you walk nearby

  • Really nice castle in the middle of an incredible village... The castle itself had been reconstructed by particulars but preserving it's essence.
  • Superb small village with his totally restored Castle. Possibility to picnic by the River at the foot of the village. Beautiful family outing

  • Pretty village, part of "the most beautiful villages of France", short course to make the tour of the site, views varied, photos of old lovers stone will be charmed. Downside, lack of shops (bakery, supermarket), lunch, picnic or restaurant it is (planned areas has that effect on a river). Parking € 2 and € 3. Allow 1/2 day for the discovery of the village
