  • This place is an astonishing feat of natural beauty and human endeavour. Watching the locals wait seemingly forever, to go out and about their business of fetching shellfish for their own consumption at the same time as commercial tractors trawling over the ever changing but regularly exposed mud flats is a fantastic spectacle. If you add that to the lovely views, and the challenge of timing it right if you (embarrasingly) speak very little of the language, then, like we did - you will find the passage du gois an unforgettable experience. We've been on holiday in the area 4 times in 10 years, as many Brits- and people from France do. If you haven't seen this place whilst you have been in the Vendee, then you have missed out. Outside of all of this, Noirmoutier itself is a lovely island, with excellent restaurants and really accommodating people. Much like the rest of the region and country , which we are far too quick to bash without experiencing. Highly recommended.
