Musee Memorial de la Bataille de Normandie, Bayeux

4.4
#3 of 63 in Museums in Calvados
One of the best on the topic, Musee Memorial de la Bataille de Normandie has a good balance of explanations of the infamous D-Day battle and interesting artifacts both small and large. Outside the museum are four armored vehicles: a Sherman tank, a Crocodile tank trailer, and Marder and M-10 Hellcat tank destroyers. Inside are a self-propelled 105 mm howitzer, a Quad-50 caliber anti-aircraft "meat chopper," a radio truck, a bulldozer, and several other large items. • An excellent museum which explains the battle of Normandy in great detail. Very interesting and a must if on a battlefield tour of the area. Loved it and would highly recommend a visit. You can also buy tickets for the Tapestry at the front counter here.
  • Museum dedicated to the brave men who fought in Normandy during the second world war. Here the visitor will have the opportunity to learn about various armaments and equipment that the soldiers used at the time. My respect and admiration to everyone who fought in this region. Come and see!
  • I enjoyed this museum. Good descriptions on items and plenty on display. A nice variety of artefacts also from a WW2 condom right up to a caterpillar bulldozer. Worth a visit and you can get a deal ticket if you want to visit any of the three museums in Bayeux. We saw the tapestry museum and also came here and got a good price for both. The ticket is valid for one year also if you don't plan on visiting straight away This museum does close for lunch if you plan on visiting.
  • Most of the reviews seem to suggest this is a large museum but it is actually fairly small in my view. Although the information and exhibits are mixed up, I want to review these as two separate elements as the quality of each is very different. The boards containing information are all in both French and English and are of the highest standard. Not much is missing and even someone who already knows about the battle for Normandy will learn a little. The exhibits on the other hand aren’t shown to anything like the same standard. Any uniforms are shown on terrible 1970s shop dummies. The small cases of exhibits sometimes explain enough but the larger ones are very lacking in detail. The Diorama is breathtakingly bad. It looks like an excuse to use any left over bits of kit and the odd dummy. I assume they thought that adding some rubble would make the menswear dummy look like he is in the battlefield. It didn’t work, it looks ridiculous.
  • Really complete overview of the battle in brittany, including D-Day. The museum looks a little bit dated (furniture is broken, no devices to support your visit), but the information is very complete. For children there are better museums that are more entertaining. For adults this is just fine and not too expensive (adult 7,50 euro 2019)
