Chateau de Balleroy, Balleroy

3.6
#30 of 44 in Historic Sites in Calvados
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Built in 1631, Chateau de Balleroy is a charming château that has undergone extensive restoration and refurbishment. Guided tours show you the richly furnished interiors. Entering the château, you encounter a dramatic innovation by Mansart--the suspended staircase. Held in place by a keystone at its uppermost level, the stairs and balustrades are supported by a series of vaulting with no supporting pillars.

One of the best and most memorable features waits in the outer courtyard, where you can explore the International Balloon Museum. A collection of pictures, miniatures, collectables, documents, scale models, and really unusual objects trace the history of ballooning from its origins with the Montgolfier brothers right up to the present day.

There's also a shop with a choice of gifts and memorabilia as well as a tea room. Chateau de Balleroy is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Balleroy Edition.

  • Nice walk from the campsite. Wonderful avenue to the Castle. Was not open when we were there.

  • Firstly I should admit we didn't go inside the Chateau. We prefer to spend time in the wonderful grounds that often accompany these sorts of places. And to view the buildings from outside. There is pl...  more »
  • The visit to the castle is very interesting, parts that have kept their cachet d "time are splendid. The garden is pretty no more useless to take a ticket at € 3 just to see so take the visit to the Castle since the garden is included with. The balloon museum is not very interesting we can do without. They take holiday vouchers that is a good point. A guide is friendly.

  • Owned by the Forbes family this is a really beautiful chateau which can only be visited with a guide. We had a French speaking tour guide although a book is provided in your native language and you are given plenty of time to read and take everything in. A hot air balloon museum is also attached (3 euros extra per head) which is fascinating and quirky. Well worth a visit!
  • Beautiful castle which is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. You can visit the castle with a guide who will explain the history of the place. Also a hot air balloon museum created by none other than Malcolm Forbes who was passionate about hot air balloons.
  • A French treasure
  • I have fond memories from a French exchange with Marie-France & her brother living with their parents who were the housekeepers of the Chateau.
  • This beautiful Château with a large beautiful garden invites to the stay a. There is a small café and an exhibition on the balloon ride. A place for the relax and dream.
