Chateau de Balleroy, Balleroy

3.6
Built in 1631, Chateau de Balleroy is a charming château that has undergone extensive restoration and refurbishment. Guided tours show you the richly furnished interiors. Entering the château, you encounter a dramatic innovation by Mansart--the suspended staircase. Held in place by a keystone at its uppermost level, the stairs and balustrades are supported by a series of vaulting with no supporting pillars.

One of the best and most memorable features waits in the outer courtyard, where you can explore the International Balloon Museum. A collection of pictures, miniatures, collectables, documents, scale models, and really unusual objects trace the history of ballooning from its origins with the Montgolfier brothers right up to the present day.

There's also a shop with a choice of gifts and memorabilia as well as a tea room. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Chateau de Balleroy by using our Balleroy holiday planner .

  • The Chateau is beautifully maintained, the gardens and grounds perfect and the small number of staff very hard working. It is true that changes to the décor were made under the influence of Forbes the...  more »
  • A lovely few hours spent on our way back to Cherbourg. We were lucky enough to have a private tour of the Chateau. Small but interesting, some personal touches by owners but nice to know that it is st...  more »
  • The history of this castle is special. Built in the 17 century, due to lack of posterity gone, difficult time to a niece in the French Revolution after which the garden was changed, total German during the 2nd World War, sold in about 1970 to an American and now the possession of its three sons. The Castle has a beautiful look from the outside and the inside is interesting by the many paintings and sometimes modern photos. Also the large pigeon-House in which 3000 pigeons stayed is well worth a visit.

  • Owned by the Forbes family this is a really beautiful chateau which can only be visited with a guide. We had a French speaking tour guide although a book is provided in your native language and you are given plenty of time to read and take everything in. A hot air balloon museum is also attached (3 euros extra per head) which is fascinating and quirky. Well worth a visit!
  • The castle looks nice but its relatively small compared to others. Not saying it is not worth seeing, but if you need to travel a large distance then other bigger castles maybe more worth the trouble since you will be done within an hour or less.
  • Beautiful castle which is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. You can visit the castle with a guide who will explain the history of the place. Also a hot air balloon museum created by none other than Malcolm Forbes who was passionate about hot air balloons.
  • I have fond memories from a French exchange with Marie-France & her brother living with their parents who were the housekeepers of the Chateau.
  • A French treasure
