La Vallee Troglodytique des Goupillieres, Azay-le-Rideau

3.9
#4 of 8 in Things to do in Azay-le-Rideau
Discover medieval caves and their historical uses at La Vallee Troglodytique des Goupillieres. These caves feature three farms dug into the stone with wells, bakers' ovens, cattle sheds, a grain silo, and an underground refuge. Let your children's imaginations run free with reproductions of a cabin, fortress, and a witch’s house. Then go inside the enclosed garden filled with plants to make a butterfly's paradise. Dine at The Troglodyte Gourmand serving tartines, pancakes, drinks, and homemade ice cream. Guided tours are only in French, but printed booklets in English describe the caves that were dug out by peasant farmers and builders during the Middle Ages. Families lived until 1905 in these troglodytes farms in very difficult conditions.

Third time I take family or friends visit this site INDISPENSABLE for all who visit the castles of the Loire. I'd be born in the 18th or 19th century, perhaps I grew up in this hamlet and would have been a stonemason illiterate, operated by the Lords or the clergy... This visit, which does not happen to the sly, fills me every time. The reconstitution of the habitat is very natural and close to what it should be, gross, furniture wood fence very rustic... Touching. Taking the time to get into the skin of the people who lived there, every time I measure my chance to live in the 21st century, have had access to education, and live in a country at peace. Thank you for these moments.

We visited this beautiful site with our three children and my parents old enough, and, which is awesome, it's like the site everyone. Guided very suitable for children and adults. Accessible in stroller and enough places for to sit and relax. We spent all morning and ate a very typical rustic meals on site. The site is very emotional in its authenticity because it highlights the harshness of peasant life. WARM WELCOME, FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE, HISTORIC SITE. RECOMMEND.

Was a recommended stop on our walking tour. Our visit exceeded our expectations. Louis-Marie Chardon has created a remarkable restoration of a small grouping of troglodyte dwellings. The dwellings are furnished with old household goods and farm implements. The brochure and signage do a good job of explaining what life was like for the original inhabitants.

After seeing so many Chateaus in the region it was very interesting to see how the other "half" lived. Well maintained and beautiful area too.

One of the best troglodyte places to visit with kids. Run by a family who pours its love into the place. And do try the foués.

This place is awesome. We got there early and the owner showed up from nowhere and opened up for us. He spoke enough English, and was very cheerful. He also would explain stuff to us as he saw us wondering the property. Only down fall is the mosquitos!!!!!!! Good luck
