Bridge Historic Site
Pont d'Avignon was built in the late 12th century, and was originally 900 m (2,950 ft) long, with arches larger than any other Roman bridge of that era. Although the bridge has been rebuilt many times, it has gradually lost arches since the first time it was damaged in a siege, in 1226. Today, only four of the original 22 arches remain. Our Avignon family vacation planner makes visiting Pont d'Avignon and other Avignon attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • It's a thing to do if you're in Avignon. It's close to the palais du papes, so it's easy to combine the two. Nice views of the river.
  • The famous Pont d'Avignon is the picturesque bridge spanning half the river towards the Ile de Piot west of the town. This bridge began as the Pont Saint-Bénézet around 1180 to connect Avignon with the town of Villeneuve-les-Avignon on the west side of the Rhône (where the land was ruled by the Kings of France). The Pont Saint-Bénézet was destroyed about 40 years later, when King Louix VIII was laying seige to Avignon during the Albigensian Crusade. (Albigensian Crusade was a 20-year military campaign initiated by Popes Catharism in Languedoc) , Following the war, the bridge was rebuilt, with 22 stone arches. Unfortunately the arches tended to collapse during the periodic flooding of the Rhône, and the bridge was abandoned in the 17th century. The remaining part of the bridge is a four-arch span that's survived since the 14th century. The small Chapel Saint Nicholas on the bridge's second pier was built in the 12th century, but extensively renovated since that time. The current Pont d'Avignon is part of a World Heritage Site, along with Avignon's Palais des Papes and the Cathedral Notre-Dame des Doms.
  • This must be the most famous bridge in the world, and it does not take you anywhere. It is beautiful, and the feel-well factor of getting on it can not be paid. Awesome place.
  • The 12th century bridge no longer goes all the way across the river, but is worth visiting due to its incredible historic significance. It is still a nice place to walk around and get views of the old city.
  • Nice place to walk and best with the audioguides, but probably only worth it if you do the combination tickets with the palace.
