Place du Forum, Arles

#18 of 60 in Things to do in Arles
Vincent van Gogh set up his easel frequently in Place du Forum, near the northeastern corner's famous Cafe Terrace. Historians say he looked south toward the artificially lit terrace of the popular coffee house--and beyond it to the darkness of the Rue du Palais and the tower of a former church (now Musée Lapidaire). Place du Forum is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Arles Edition.

  • I suggest finding a sunny spot, ordering some wine and spend some time looking around and soaking in the history. Hard not to love this place.  more »
  • Is a small square a few steps from Place de la Republique with several bars and restaurants with outdoor seating. On a sunny day "must" stop, the atmosphere is extraordinary.

  • I have the chance to go to Arles regularly for a few years... In the off-season, I love come take a breakfast in the Sun on this very beautiful place, or even have lunch at noon (though few restaurants are open season heirs). I'm running this place invaded by tourists in high season... And not terrible service at the restaurants. And hide a little further... Arles is rich with many small squares and little streets adorable. No need to go to congregate with others: go there... fast!
