Cemetery
Depicted frequently in the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, Roman necropolis Les Alyscamps lies a short distance outside the walls of Arles. Founded by the Romans and taken over by Christians in the fourth century, this was Arles' main burial ground for nearly 1,500 years. Home to the tombs of martyr St. Genest and Arles' first bishop, this became a coveted resting place. • driveway lined with cypress trees and sarcophagi from the Roman period, (but the most beautiful are in the Museum of Ancient Arles, a missed under any circumstances) resulting in a charming Chapel. the place is especially true for its charm, its calm and its welcome shade in the summer. You can park for free around the stadium.

  • Walkway full of roman ancient tombstones. Not much of tourist information on site
  • Walking in the steps of Vincent Van Goch
  • It's not a museum. It's a park/graveyard with a large number of sarcophagi and a semi-ruined church. Things aren't labeled. The sarcophagi are not museum-quality but their sheer number is impressive; it makes you realize how big and rich Classic-Era Ales was. The church at the end was damp and dark and looked like the set of a horror film, complete with a short tunnel you could walk through. There are other things to look at in Arles but if you've used up the other things, the Alyscamps can fill an idle half-hour.
  • Ruins of a necropolis (city of the death) ... was rainy so the trip was a bit more dramatic. 3.50 euro of fee. Worthed... was a place where van Gogh used to go.
  • By a beautiful sunny winter morning walk around trying to spot the signs, symbols left on these sarcophagi... our treasure hunt! Few people, quiet and relaxing, after admiring the most beautiful sarcophagi discovered here at the Museum of Ancient Arles. Absolutely essential for the poetry and romance of the place.
