Les Alyscamps, Arles

4.0
#6 of 11 in Historic Sites in Arles
Depicted frequently in the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, Roman necropolis Les Alyscamps lies a short distance outside the walls of Arles. Founded by the Romans and taken over by Christians in the fourth century, this was Arles' main burial ground for nearly 1,500 years. Home to the tombs of martyr St. Genest and Arles' first bishop, this became a coveted resting place. A sarcophagus driveway that leads to a Church unfortunately left to the pigeons... In short a visit which leaves hungry then that this could really be fantastic. It's a shame that there is no investment while 2 the LUMA foundation built an Arts Center with a Franck Gehry Tower.

Somewhere hidden near the LUMA (50 meters) that is worth visiting! An alley of plane trees under which are folded old graves Roman which leads to a beautiful church dilapidated but charming!

It is quite paradoxical to note a site that is a cemetery, and not any one, since it is nothing less than the Champs Elysees as attraction. Not the Paris of course, delivered to the ceaseless flow of tourists or crowds adorers of the round ball (victorious) night world, right, of a necropolis among the most important of the Roman world. A city of the dead to use etymology Greek, lined with sarcophagi, and who experienced a wonderful until the middle ages before being abandoned, boom delivered to the looters then literally cut on behalf of progress at the end of the 19th century when the railroad required channels and workshops instead of these alleys. The voices of the Lords are very penetrable and were... What it still offers nonetheless, and despite a relative drop today, a relaxing walk in one of the most emblematic places of Arles and perhaps the most secret, outside the walls. Because walk here, no offense to the grumpy (I read a negative review that leaves me speechless on "empty sarcophagi without lid alignment" as if it were an amusement park sort of Arlatix!), is both an emotion (as putting its not in Roman life, his lifestyle, his funeral rites) and the privilege to set foot on the soil of a place that inspired Van Gogh but also Gauguin. I add to this a poetic vision of Paul-Jean Toulet, who was able to talk to the memory of the missing: "in Arles where are the Alyscamps... Beware of the sweetness of things. When you feel your heavy heart beat without cause... Speak low, if it is love, at the edge of the graves". There to do a walk in love there is a step that I won't cross, though... Note: Les Alyscamps lie under the spotlight since now they are next to the construction site of the Tower of the Foundation Luma in the former SNCF shops, now converted into exhibition venues (meetings of photography) and restore. The shock of the old world with the tumult of current work and in the background the future Gehry Tower which prefigures / disfigures the future of the Arles landscape around.

    Really quiet interesting historic necropolis.

Walkway full of roman ancient tombstones. Not much of tourist information on site

It's not a museum. It's a park/graveyard with a large number of sarcophagi and a semi-ruined church. Things aren't labeled. The sarcophagi are not museum-quality but their sheer number is impressive; it makes you realize how big and rich Classic-Era Ales was. The church at the end was damp and dark and looked like the set of a horror film, complete with a short tunnel you could walk through. There are other things to look at in Arles but if you've used up the other things, the Alyscamps can fill an idle half-hour.

Ruins of a necropolis (city of the death) ... was rainy so the trip was a bit more dramatic. 3.50 euro of fee. Worthed... was a place where van Gogh used to go.
