Founded by the Romans and taken over by Christians in the fourth century, this was Arles' main burial ground for nearly 1,500 years.   • We visited the site a rainy day fine, so with the atmosphere permeating the place. These alignments of sarcophagi which some are highlighted remarkable sculptures, other carriers of the marks of a nascent Christianity. But what a pity that the remains of the Church Saint-Honorat lying at the bottom of the aisles near the Christian Cemetery, are left abandoned and the invasion of the pigeons generously marking their property!   • Alyscamps remind me of a strange dream or film as it is Old (yes, with capital o), but somehow forgotten and neglected. In another city with fewer touristy Roman ruins it would be the main attraction....  more »
  • Santiago Compostela pilgrimage is one origin of the Arles way. From the train station is a 20-minute walk away. It is less than 10 minutes from the tourist information. Quiet lies in the hustle and bustle of the crowded old city, very calm.
