Les Alyscamps, Arles

3.9
#6 of 14 in Historic Sites in Arles
Depicted frequently in the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, Roman necropolis Les Alyscamps lies a short distance outside the walls of Arles. Founded by the Romans and taken over by Christians in the fourth century, this was Arles' main burial ground for nearly 1,500 years. Home to the tombs of martyr St. Genest and Arles' first bishop, this became a coveted resting place. • Besides the quotation from Dante, interesting curiosity but nothing more, Les Alyscamps have the power to hold itself still sacred and mystical atmosphere that permeates from time immemorial this fantastic Roman necropolis. The main Boulevard, painted by Van Gogh, still attracts dozens of students of Arts and painting from around the world come to retrace the footsteps of the Dutch master. The main church, with its times and its Tower unfortunately not open to complete the landscape and this corner of the past never quite set. Highly recommended.

  • Although this is an old alfar road lined with hundreds of antique sarcophagi, you have to pay entrance to go from Arles to the small, but very thought Chapel, where the road now ends. The sarcophagi, which stands along the road, are all very simple cut. The beautiful sarcophagi of marble reliefs, there also has been in Les Alyscamps, are now all in the archaeological museum. But the mood in Les Alyscams, which of course they can not flyyes at the museum, is quite special and, of course, has also inspired van Gogh for a painting of the site at løvfaldstid.

  • An ancient Roman cemetery is now something like a park and a museum. There is also an abandoned church in it. It is generally interesting to see.
  • Very atmospheric. The (presumably deconsecrated) church has an air of mystery.
  • Really quiet interesting historic necropolis.
  • Walkway full of roman ancient tombstones. Not much of tourist information on site
  • It's not a museum. It's a park/graveyard with a large number of sarcophagi and a semi-ruined church. Things aren't labeled. The sarcophagi are not museum-quality but their sheer number is impressive; it makes you realize how big and rich Classic-Era Ales was. The church at the end was damp and dark and looked like the set of a horror film, complete with a short tunnel you could walk through. There are other things to look at in Arles but if you've used up the other things, the Alyscamps can fill an idle half-hour.
