Les Alyscamps, Arles

3.9
#6 of 14 in Historic Sites in Arles
Depicted frequently in the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, Roman necropolis Les Alyscamps lies a short distance outside the walls of Arles. Founded by the Romans and taken over by Christians in the fourth century, this was Arles' main burial ground for nearly 1,500 years. Home to the tombs of martyr St. Genest and Arles' first bishop, this became a coveted resting place. • Is a little off center. There is a site map (at least in photocopy) very poorly edited. In practice a long tree-lined avenue of cypresses with eventually a chapel full of pigeons that flutter

  • This cemetery is the husk of the ancient Roman burial place for Arles. Rows of empty sarcophagi along a single avenue culminate in a somewhat battered Christian church. All the inscriptions and other ...  more »
  • All highlights of this old behind have been spent in various museums, including the archaeological museum of Arles itself. Later time sober stone tombs and one or two buildings are what is left. Total entry not worth.

  • Really quiet interesting historic necropolis.
  • Walkway full of roman ancient tombstones. Not much of tourist information on site
  • It's not a museum. It's a park/graveyard with a large number of sarcophagi and a semi-ruined church. Things aren't labeled. The sarcophagi are not museum-quality but their sheer number is impressive; it makes you realize how big and rich Classic-Era Ales was. The church at the end was damp and dark and looked like the set of a horror film, complete with a short tunnel you could walk through. There are other things to look at in Arles but if you've used up the other things, the Alyscamps can fill an idle half-hour.
  • Walking in the steps of Vincent Van Goch
  • Ruins of a necropolis (city of the death) ... was rainy so the trip was a bit more dramatic. 3.50 euro of fee. Worthed... was a place where van Gogh used to go.
