Les Alyscamps, Arles

4.0
#8 of 11 in Historic Sites in Arles
Cemetery Ruin
Depicted frequently in the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, Roman necropolis Les Alyscamps lies a short distance outside the walls of Arles. Founded by the Romans and taken over by Christians in the fourth century, this was Arles' main burial ground for nearly 1,500 years. Home to the tombs of martyr St. Genest and Arles' first bishop, this became a coveted resting place. • We spent a couple of hours one sunny morning pottering around the Necropolis, thankfully no dead bodies!  more »
  • This is one of the eeriest, most evocative places I've ever visited. My husband and I had the place to ourselves one morning in May. The ruined, empty church was silent except for the constant cooing ...  more »
  • Les Alyscamps is nice break away from the hustle bustle of the town. The trees provide some nice shade from the heat of the sun.  more »

  • Really quiet interesting historic necropolis.
  • Walkway full of roman ancient tombstones. Not much of tourist information on site
  • Walking in the steps of Vincent Van Goch
  • It's not a museum. It's a park/graveyard with a large number of sarcophagi and a semi-ruined church. Things aren't labeled. The sarcophagi are not museum-quality but their sheer number is impressive; it makes you realize how big and rich Classic-Era Ales was. The church at the end was damp and dark and looked like the set of a horror film, complete with a short tunnel you could walk through. There are other things to look at in Arles but if you've used up the other things, the Alyscamps can fill an idle half-hour.
  • Ruins of a necropolis (city of the death) ... was rainy so the trip was a bit more dramatic. 3.50 euro of fee. Worthed... was a place where van Gogh used to go.
