Espace Van Gogh, Arles

3.8
#2 of 6 in Museums in Arles
The courtyard of the former Arles hospital, now named Espace Van Gogh, is a cultural and academic center for Vincent van Gogh's works, including several masterpieces. Van Gogh was brought to the hospital in 1888 after he cut off his own ear lobe. The two-story hospital features a central French garden. White chalk gallery arcades are reminiscent of Arabic architecture. Put Espace Van Gogh on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Arles tour planner.

There is a beautiful garden space Van gogh, former Hospital where Van gogh was treated. You will arrive at the space Van gogh by chance because the city is reluctant to enter this place that is really the only place where you will be in the footsteps of Van gogh. Of course, don't expect to see paintings, but at least you are in the atmosphere. Agree with that so that as many see this place and so show the public services space Van gogh does not disappear.

The old Hôtel-Dieu which housed Van Gogh during his stay stirred in Arles between 1888 and 1889 remains only walls and facades, which the roughcast is a bit too thick to give thanks to the genius of the painter. The renovation has optimized spaces and allowed to install a library that does honor to the city, but the garden inside, all flowery and Chin whatsoever, flatly evokes the palette of the painter through a worthy of a pretty roundabout applied floor. A few shops and cafes add to place, probably necessary mercantile touch, which themselves are substituted the medical past. For the sick, we don't complain, for tourists, one could imagine a more didactic and instructive ambulation. The floors are also, in part, dedicated to temporary exhibitions (including the meetings of photography) where did see good however that hanging is random. For these reasons, the space Van Gogh passed a broader, more authentic, more specific, mission around the work and life of the painter, as these pieces and partially occupied offices. It's a shame because the place could echo the Foundation Van Gogh, newly installed in the city and the Arlaten Museum, which will be launched in 2019. Since the Yellow House was stupidly shaved (and no not rebuilt) by default public initiative after the bombings of 1944, the space that shows the name of the painter in front could do more and better. The porch of the Hôtel-Dieu is a prayer that one can always dream see someday answered.
