Fort Carre is also known as Fort Carré d'Antibes. It was named the squared foot in the 16th-century when Henri de Mandon (Henry III) added four arrowhead shaped bastions to a tower called la tour Saint-Florent. In the 17th century, the Marquis de Vauban fortified the fort by adding traverses and outer walls, enlarging the embrasures and exchanging the stone parapets for brick parapets. Fort Carre is also well known for housing (imprisoning) Napoleon Bonaparte for 10 days and the villain's fortress in the James Bond film, Never Say Never Again.
