Historic Site Tourist Spot
Fort Carre is also known as Fort Carré d'Antibes. It was named the squared foot in the 16th-century when Henri de Mandon (Henry III) added four arrowhead shaped bastions to a tower called la tour Saint-Florent. In the 17th century, the Marquis de Vauban fortified the fort by adding traverses and outer walls, enlarging the embrasures and exchanging the stone parapets for brick parapets. Fort Carre is also well known for housing (imprisoning) Napoleon Bonaparte for 10 days and the villain's fortress in the James Bond film, Never Say Never Again. • We visited fort on a short visit to Antibes. It was nice and had great views. It was not that busy when we visited. There were group tours but we were very tired so just looked around on our own.  more »
  • This fortress is the largest building of its kind on the French Riviera. Here are interesting excursions. The Fort is beautiful by itself and gives stunning views of the coast.  more »

  • Nice walk through a nature reserve and along coastal path. Fort reminded me of the fortifications on Gibraltar with graffiti scraped onto bricks by soldiers. Nice views and pleasant visit.
  • I took a rambling walk around the entire fort and along the sea. It was spectacular. After a bit of a hike I decided to go to the fort and took the tour which was only a few euros. Our tour guide spoke excellent English, despite her stating otherwise. There were only 2 other people on the tour and the guide explained everything very well. Shared lots of history and stories about the fort and the area. After enjoying the tour I hit the beach for a swim and then headed back to Nice via train. An awesome low key day trip, highly recommend!
  • A nice walk. Cost 3€ to go into the castle.
  • There was not much to see there at the Fort Carre but if you go there by foot, the scenery is gorgeous!
  • A nice little fort, but make sure you don't accidentally arrive during lunch...
