Fort Carre, Antibes

3.9
#3 of 10 in Historic Sites in Antibes
Fort Carre is also known as Fort Carré d'Antibes. It was named the squared foot in the 16th-century when Henri de Mandon (Henry III) added four arrowhead shaped bastions to a tower called la tour Saint-Florent. In the 17th century, the Marquis de Vauban fortified the fort by adding traverses and outer walls, enlarging the embrasures and exchanging the stone parapets for brick parapets. Fort Carre is also well known for housing (imprisoning) Napoleon Bonaparte for 10 days and the villain's fortress in the James Bond film, Never Say Never Again. • Incredible views along the coast to Nice. An interesting castle although there wasn't much historical information available in English. There is a tour in French. Entry is free but there was a long wait to get in (an hour for mid-September).

  • Good guided tour. Great views. Small entrance fee.
  • I took a rambling walk around the entire fort and along the sea. It was spectacular. After a bit of a hike I decided to go to the fort and took the tour which was only a few euros. Our tour guide spoke excellent English, despite her stating otherwise. There were only 2 other people on the tour and the guide explained everything very well. Shared lots of history and stories about the fort and the area. After enjoying the tour I hit the beach for a swim and then headed back to Nice via train. An awesome low key day trip, highly recommend!
  • I liked the fort it reminded me of the fort in sint marten i also had a tour and the tour was great and on the way back i saw a lambo😲
