Palais de l'Ile, Annecy

4.1
Palais de l'Ile is a recognizable feature of the Thiou canal that splits the water with its sharp corner and forces it apart. When you see the stalwart, gray stone it will come as no surprise that this building has been standing since 1132. It began as the residence of the Lord of Annecy, then an administrative headquarters, courthouse, a mint, and a jail until 1865 and again World War II. Nowadays, you don’t need to be arrested to visit the interior of the castle, just buy a ticket to the history museum located inside and wander through the halls and rooms that once housed both nobility and criminals. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Annecy holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Palais de l'Ile and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Although we went several times in recent years ANNECY, we had never visited the Palace of the Isle. So we decided to go there during the month of September. The site is very beautiful. It was a former prison which served even during the last world war. It was this day an exhibition (blah, blah). Still, I confess that I was a little disappointed, not the building, but the explanations given. Finally, it is my point of view.

  • It is a building always appeared that Annecy. Seems to be that in the old days you could home, prison, but blends into the surrounding streets, is a charming building. Restaurant here is near the restaurant there is a little bit away, heading to the city's taste and price is much more reasonable. Taking the view, take a real though.

  • So wonderful here. We were greeted by a very nice English speaking lady which explained the building and how many floors etc. Wish we could go on the front but it was closed.
  • It was interesting to know about the history of the structure, but just the underground collection was absorbing cause it explained about the history with the real objects, but the other parts of the museum was just representing some small photos and it was more explanation rather than putting the visitors in the real sense of the history.
  • Very nice attraction, very cheap entry and full of information about the building and it's role over the years. As we entered we were greeted by a English speaking guide who explained lots of the history of the building, very knowledgeable + helpful.
  • Picture postcard perfect. The iconic view of Annecy. Undergoing some renovation July 2017 but open again for tours now. Has had a varied history both as jail and local Mint and must see as part of your exploration of the town.
  • Such beautiful scenery, can't miss it if you're around. Make sure to dip in Lac Annecy, it's perfect
