Palais de l'Ile, Annecy

4.1
#1 of 21 in Museums in Haute-Savoie
Specialty Museum Museum
Palais de l'Ile is a recognizable feature of the Thiou canal that splits the water with its sharp corner and forces it apart. When you see the stalwart, gray stone it will come as no surprise that this building has been standing since 1132. It began as the residence of the Lord of Annecy, then an administrative headquarters, courthouse, a mint, and a jail until 1865 and again World War II. Nowadays, you don’t need to be arrested to visit the interior of the castle, just buy a ticket to the history museum located inside and wander through the halls and rooms that once housed both nobility and criminals. Make Palais de l'Ile part of your personalized Annecy itinerary using our Annecy tourist route planner.

  • The architecture is very beautiful inegablemente from the outside, and is the typical picture of Annecy. However have been refaccionandola throughout the year and is not finished, I do not think that it is worth paying 3 euros to visit inside. but on the outside and accompanied by the old village around is beautiful.

  • This is a super beautiful place but unfortunately the main picture spot that is shown is currently under construction. The best part of the area is walking around and getting lost in the different alleys and cafes. There were some amazing shops that you can get lost in.
  • Palais de l'Isle is also called vieilles prisons (old jail). It is a 12th century building being renovated (completion summer 2017). It is the most famous sight of the city of Annecy, a town in the Northern French Alps sitting on a beautiful lake and surrounded by mountains.
  • It is so charmful! Very nice to spend a couple of hours in this area - specially in this building!
  • It's looks like venice 90% but in diffrent culture.
  • Sitting on a triangular islet in the Canal de Thiou. 12th century turreted palace. It has been a lordly residence, courthouse, mint and prison over the centuries. Annecy's most visible landmark. Today it hosts local-history displays.
