Lac d'Annecy, Annecy

(4,200+ reviews on the web)
Water Body
Lac d'Annecy bears the nickname of "Europe's Cleanest Lake,” because of strict environmental regulations that have been in place since the 1960s. Consequently, it is also a hotspot for water sports and swimming. You’ll understand why when you see its delicate blue waters up close, clear to the bottom, and as untouched as the day it was discovered. The effect of the lake's beauty is immortalized in Paul Cezanne's painting "Le Lac Bleu," which took its inspiration from it in 1896.

The lake formed 18,000 years ago, when alpine glaciers melted. Fed by multiple rivers and an underground water source, it is a basin for the cleanest of water. Consider a refreshing dip at one of the beaches and enjoy the day with a picnic, instead of spending bundles at local cafes. • Just a stone's throw away from Geneva is this spectacular lake and the picturesque town of Annecy. Lots of tourists but they are mostly the french themselves enjoying all that this historic town with its lake, canals and pristine river has to offer. I've never seen such clear water run through a town.
  • Amazing place. Nice view at night!
  • Very charming view, you can swim there during summer
  • Great puddle.
  • One of France's greatest secrets that perhaps not many non-Europeans know about. A pristine lake set amongst the beautiful backdrop of the alps in a charming old French village with an array of shops and restaurants and bakeries. In addition, the Haute-Savoie region is known for its cheeses, particularly those creamy and rich ones you can't seem to get enough of. You can eat them in fondues or à la raclette. It is best to come to Annecy in the month of July when the weather rests in the 80s, a refreshing breeze blows, and the dry heat pulls you to take a swim in the lake at one of several beach choices, or perhaps rent a boat or canoe or paddle board. Also, the town is filled with live music shows, dramatic performances, and a spectacular DJ'd outdoor concert right on Albigny beach on Bastille day. Quite simply, I love this town and see it as a representation of all the best parts of French culture.
