Gorges du Fier, Annecy

4.5
#1 of 32 in Wildlife Areas in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes
Wildlife Area Nature / Park
Breath in the savage beauty of the Gorges du Fier from walkways built 24 m (79 ft) above the burbling waters. Read the signs you see along the path, as the information will reveal a surprise. Also stop in the little room at the end to see film footage that shows the changes in water level. You'll be glad the water is low as you cross the wooden bridge and feel the spray sprinkle on your face. • The video display at the start of the gorge is very enlightening and shows what happens when the gorge floods. The walkway through is well done and it is fun to look for the 'faces in the rocks'. Well...  more »
  • Took kids here while staying close by in Camping La Ravoire Annecy. It was very good value and a lovely morning out. Our 10 year old and 4 year old walked it no bother, lovely area to have a pic nic, ...  more »
  • This is easily reached by car from Annecy. There is a walk way along the gorge so you feel as if you are really experiencing it up close.  more »

  • We enjoyed it, walkway above the gorge was cool. Maybe a bit more info on the geological side but then again we like that sort of thing
  • 5 star for imagination, because I couldn't see no faces carved by nature, 4 star for the effort of installing hanging trail, 3 star for the nature itself
  • Interesting boardwalk over gorge.
  • Good place to spend a few hours. Nicely laid out. Look out for the faces on the rock!
  • Amazing very narrow and complexly eroded gorge. More like a cave river with open roof. You traverse about 500m (and back same way) along a slightly dilapidated walkway 20m above the "normal" river level (and still 20m below the top), then some river bank around more crazy river erosion, then back same way. The river's been known to flood much deeper than the walkway during spring melt, and there are some bad videos and photos of this, plus some boards with ecosystem info and cute local fairytales, but the highlight is the gorge itself.
