Basilique de la Visitation, Annecy

3.9
#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in Annecy
Standing as a tribute to an ancient monastery, Basilique de la Visitation holds the remains of two saints. Two bronze sarcophagi celebrate the life of François de Sales, a well-loved bishop, and Jeanne de Chantal. The church was built by renowned architect Alfred-Henri Recoura from 1909 to 1930. Pick up an explanatory leaflet, available in multiple languages, for information on the stained glass windows. Stop by the well-stocked gift shop for souvenirs. Note that if you're coming on foot, the walk up can be a bit strenuous. • This church is very pretty but it is such a trek to get to from the bottom. It's slightly more modern that others i've seen. The view makes everything worth it though. You can see over all of Anncey.  more »
  • Well on top of Annecy, Basilica with good stained glass is beautiful space. The views from overseas to the city and Lake are very nice as well as doing up the path.

  • Nice place to have a good view of the town and exercise a bit the legs going uphill
  • It seems an old church for the features, but it is a nice game in which 900 successful architectural Recoura, serves in an eclectic style, a reinforced concrete covered by elements from the past. I wouldn't even know how to classify the overall style, but there are Romanesque and Gothic pieces with modern inventive pieces. The portal is reminiscent of the rose Windows and portals, although it doesn't have the classic form of the ancient Gothic cathedrals, but the apse with mosaic recalls the Roman spirit and previous churches. Inside, the stained-glass Windows show the lives of Saint Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal, co-founders of the order of the visitation, and of which the Church gathers the bodies in your lovely brass caskets on the sides of the altar. An interesting fact to note are the huge cracks in the façade infill walls. Inside the Church are to note the beautiful blue marble columns. Nice Museum and the carillon of the belfry.
