Château d'Angers, Angers

4.4
#1 of 136 in Things to do in Maine et Loire
is a historic castle situated in the city of Angers, Loire Valley, in the department of Maine-et-Loire. This place has a rich history, and you will greatly appreciate this castle, which was built in the 9th century, for its unique structural design. Further construction in the thirteenth century added to the size of this castle. The castle served as a fortress because of its strategic location, overlooking the River Maine. Tourists coming to the castle can view the interiors that are tastefully decorated. Parisian tapestry belonging to ancient ages adorns the castle. The chapel inside the castle is also worth a visit. Despite suffering damages during the World War and later, it has been renovated and is a museum of intricate and priceless tapestry work. Superb visit under the Sun. The castle gardens are wonderful. Great view from the top of the towers of the city and the river. Rooms with tapestries are very well exposed. The present guide explains the tapestries as well as the imposing. Again thank you to the city why the restoration of this monument. Really a great time spend with family.

This is one of the most remarkable medieval fortified castles I've ever visited. The gardens are beautifully & artistically designed; the esplanade offers great 360° views of Angers & its surroundings. The interiors of the castle are historically decorated and clearly illustrated if one opts for the self guided tour. Guided tours in small groups are available at different times of the day. This site is truly worth the visit ❤

The castle itself is nice but the tapestry is an absolute must see. There are free guided tours. The English one we took at 11am was a great way to put the visit in context and understand what the tapestry depicts

Lovely place to visit. Good audio guide. Wish we'd had more time to spend on the tapestry.

The tapestries alone are worth the visit. The castle is very impressive. The only negative point is that the staff ordered us out at 18.15 , while we expected to have stayed till the closing time at 18.30.

It is a beautiful historical place in Angers, where you can learn some history, enjoy a good view of the city and visit the museum section. It's free for french students inder 26 years.
