Chateau Royal D' Amboise, Amboise

4.2
#1 of 23 in Parks in Loire Valley
Castle Historic Site
With sweeping panoramic views of the Loire valley, it's no wonder why Chateau Royal D' Amboise was a favorite royal residence of several successive kings. Balconies overlooking the valley create an air of grandeur. The tomb of Leonardo da Vinci resides in the Saint Hubert chapel, renowned as a masterpiece of extravagant Gothic architecture. An armored tank designed by Leonardo da Vinci sits on the grounds of the château.

The architecture quintessentially represents the French Renaissance with gardens and the Minimes and the Heurtault towers. The towers, which served as the royal residence, are available for you to explore, but you need prior permission. After the lavish royal pomp, with permission again, you can descend to the mysterious underground, a place few royals ever saw. • Enjoyed the visit here. The castle while imposing from the outside and river, it is rather small inside with a large park. Favorite things include da vinci burial, views of the valley, and the horse t...  more »
  • What a terrific way to spend our day. So much history and and the construction abilities of the times are really amazing. In a quiet corner, L. da Vinci is in his final resting place.  more »

  • Most of the rooms have been demolished many years ago, but those that remain have been refurbished really nicely. There is a real sense of story in the place; the chapel has modern stained glass which is lovely on blues and yellows; Leonardo's tomb is simple; and the view from the top of the tower is fab. Nice gardens, simple and discreet shop. Nice guides. Big open space. Clean toilets. Quirky spinning water tap
  • Much much bigger than it looks. We spent close to two hours there. Lots of history and Da Vincis grave. I thought it was expensive at the start but was pleasantly surprised. . Well worth it.
  • We loved this château! It has amazing views, a great location by the river, and gorgeous architecture and grounds.
