Château du Clos Lucé, Amboise
(4/5 based on 3,400+ reviews on the web)
Famous as the official residence of Leonardo da Vinci at the end of his life between 1516 and 1519, Château du Clos Lucé is now an interactive museum with forty models of visionary machines designed by Leonardo. You can experiment with Leonardo's inventions by steering his tank, paddling his boat, operating his fan-style machine gun, and spinning Archimedes' screw used to lift water.

Pick up a brochure in English and 14 other languages at the entrance that includes a map of the garden, the park, the château, and the countryside.

Discover the first automobile illustrated in Leonardo's innovative mechanical drawings and the machines he developed using his knowledge of botany and zoology. His studies of body mechanics inspire the workings of many of his machines. View his illustrations for flying machines that parallel modern technologies for helicopters, gliders, and propellers. Explore Leonardo's plan for a functioning city and his famous geometric drawing of a dodecahedron.

Enter Leonardo's universe in the park containing 20 huge interactive machines. Float around the lake in the boat Leonardo designed, walk along the paths with 40 oversized translucent canvases depicting diverse works, and walk across the two-level bridge Leonardo designed to reach his garden that brings his botanical drawings to life. Your children will love this fun exhibit so much they'll forget it's also educational. • For lovers of old stones, but also for lovers of science. A beautiful marriage of green course and machines. The world of Leonardo da Vinci is fascinating. The place is quite captivating. Downside the visit cost quite expensive especially if adds the visit of the temporary exhibition.

  • This place is really fascinating. It is easily reached by camping car with either the choice of free camping car parking to the left of the main road out of Amboise or at the carpark at Clos Luce. You have to pay at this car park and there is only space for 6 vans. We took our friendly dog round the garden with ease and he investigated all the exhibits closely! It took us 2hrs just to go the garden. Perhaps we are slow but there's so much to take in. I'm just waiting outside the chateau now with him while mum investigates the interior.
  • Informative yet artistic. Leonardo Da Vinci's legay is geniusly arranged, recreated and displayed. Salute to the curator team. Really enjoyed my visit.
  • I first thought €15 per ticket was a little steep, but it was actually completely worth it. Very well laid out glimpse into the life and mind of one of history's great geniuses. Do not miss the garden with full-scale models of Leonardo's inventions and ghostly prints of his paintings hanging among the tree branches. Could spend the whole day here.
  • Amazing place where Leonardo Da Vinci spent several of his later years. Shows a lot of his work and his life. Worth visiting
  • Amazing place with so much history. So much to see and learn from 1 person decades ago. Must stop by .
