Chateau d'Amboise, Amboise

#1 of 40 in Parks in Loire Valley
Garden Castle Must See
With sweeping panoramic views of the Loire valley, it's no wonder why Chateau d'Amboise was a favorite royal residence of several successive kings. Balconies overlooking the valley create an air of grandeur. The tomb of Leonardo da Vinci resides in the Saint Hubert chapel, renowned as a masterpiece of extravagant Gothic architecture. An armored tank designed by Leonardo da Vinci sits on the grounds of the château.

The architecture quintessentially represents the French Renaissance with gardens and the Minimes and the Heurtault towers. The towers, which served as the royal residence, are available for you to explore, but you need prior permission. After the lavish royal pomp, with permission again, you can descend to the mysterious underground, a place few royals ever saw. • This Chateau was one of our favorites. It was surprisingly spectacular and had the best views of possibly any of the chateaus.  more »
  • Despite having paid for the ticket, with the whole family, there was materially possible to visit the Castle, except in small part because closing. After visiting the first rooms, we were pretty much (in) followed by two "stalwarts" keepers that closed in key environments behind us, until we were asked to leave the Castle. To our complaints: they could at least let us know that the castle was closing in at the time you purchase your ticket, we only got a rude answer. Beyond the mishap the Château d'amboise has the most impressive among the castles of the Loire you visit, because in an elevated position over the city, and then on the River, near which there is a departure of balloons. Also interesting is the interior garden, where in addition to flowers and ornamental trees, is also cultivated a vineyard.

  • Most of the rooms have been demolished many years ago, but those that remain have been refurbished really nicely. There is a real sense of story in the place; the chapel has modern stained glass which is lovely on blues and yellows; Leonardo's tomb is simple; and the view from the top of the tower is fab. Nice gardens, simple and discreet shop. Nice guides. Big open space. Clean toilets. Quirky spinning water tap
  • Beautiful and easy to get to if you're staying in Amboise. If you get the chance, go see the show they put on during the summer evenings. Performed by locals it was very entertaining! Goes from 8-10p.
  • A wonderful experience. Even though it rained it didn't spoil. The chateaux is beautiful as are the gardens
  • Beautiful facility, well kept and the demonstrations are entertaining. Views of the valley are worth the effort. Easy to access from the old town by a lift near the square.
  • Very nicely presented with fantastic views. The audio narrative is a must if you want to get the best out of the visit. If you park by the river you can get to most of the town in one visit.
