Chateau d'Amboise, Amboise

(3,000+ reviews on the web)
Castle
With sweeping panoramic views of the Loire valley, it's no wonder why Chateau d'Amboise was a favorite royal residence of several successive kings. Balconies overlooking the valley create an air of grandeur. The tomb of Leonardo da Vinci resides in the Saint Hubert chapel, renowned as a masterpiece of extravagant Gothic architecture. An armored tank designed by Leonardo da Vinci sits on the grounds of the château.

The architecture quintessentially represents the French Renaissance with gardens and the Minimes and the Heurtault towers. The towers, which served as the royal residence, are available for you to explore, but you need prior permission. After the lavish royal pomp, with permission again, you can descend to the mysterious underground, a place few royals ever saw. • Magnificent Castle and Park very well maintained. The underground tour is very interesting and allows you to discover places closed to the public

  • Pretty promontory on the Loire, which offers a great view of the river. The visit with the audio-guide is nice and well documented. One can regret the indication asking respect for silence and ending up with foreign guides who whine.

  • We had very little d indications in the city struggling to find the entrance to the Castle, and complicated to park the castle is nice, perched above the city, great views, few parts furnished, can visit quite quickly, the gardens are nice but too small and we quickly made the round the tomb of Leonardo da vinci in the Chapel to see , no more

  • This castle is amaizing, you have the impression of travelling into renaissance time. However i think signalisation and the description of pieces was not so good, but my visit was very nice.
  • Simple and lovely. It was incredible to see how happy being here made my two children. Enough inside to think about, and space outside to run around and pretend to be a renaissance noble. Plus, Leonardo's tomb.
  • An amazing Chateau full of history. Way back in Neolithic times, the mighty rock where Château Amboise now stands was a defensive fort. The natural promontory at the confluence of the Loire to the north and the Amasse to the south, was and is still, a perfect observation point. A town known as Ambacia, the old name for the Amasse, grew up at the foot of the fort. It was inhabited by Turones, a Celtic tribe, who gave their name to the whole area known today as The Touraine. If, when you think of France, images of elegant Renaissance Châteaux spring to mind, spare a thought for Château Amboise. Although not a Renaissance Château, it still resembles a fortress, it was here the French Renaissance took root when Charles VIII returned from Italy in 1495.
  • Great museum to see about da Vinci. Nice gardens too.
  • Nice village but the better view of chateau is in the other side of river.
