Sainte-Cecile Cathedral of Albi, Albi

4.8
Allegedly the largest brick building in the world, Sainte-Cecile Cathedral of Albi features many oversized structures, including a vault that boasts the largest painted surface in the world at 200 sq m (656 sq ft). These frescoes make up the largest and oldest ensemble of Italian Renaissance paintings in France. Added in 1492 CE, the bell tower stands 78 m (256 ft) tall. The nave is the widest Gothic example in France at 18 m (60 ft). Over 200 magnificent polychrome statues carved by artists from Cluny's workshops decorate the interior with their original colors. • A do not miss as this Cathedral is in every respect remarkable both on the architectural plan that seems so austere from the outside but which offers a beautiful setting inside with incredible finesse of the grounds. A nice discovery, and one more point for the heritage of our dear France

  • If the outside of this Cathedral is more than confusing and unusual, the Interior is beautiful. The choir and its jube are to be seen. (admission fees). One of the most visited cathedrals in France. Worth the trip!

  • Wow what a piece of history and architecture ranks right up there with Notre Dame. The audio tour is very informative I wouldn't waste my money going to the treasure room again but everything else was breathtaking.
  • St. Cecile Cathedral is at the heart of the old town of Albi. Walk down the narrow cobbled streets, turn a corner & bang, there it is in all it's awsomness! It is the tallest brick built building in the world & boy does it make it's presence felt. Inside you are blown away by it's sheer majesty, the decoration is beautiful. One of the finest Cathedrals I have ever seen.
  • Top notch medieval cathedral. The largest brick building in Europe apparently. The interior is stunning. Truly first rate and worth a visit.
  • A beautiful organ concert in St. Cecilia's Cathedral was a perfect ending to our visit to Albi.
  • Superb cathedral, brick. You can take an audioguide. Don't forget to pass by the rivers, the Tarn : There are stairs all the way round. The museum of Toulouse Lautrec is right next door too.
