City of a Thousand Fountains

Aix-en-Provence is a small, classically Provençal town, famous for being home to Cézanne. A new TGV high-speed train station that brings vacationers from the north has turned the city into a shopping town with a wide variety and representation considering its small size. Aix's Mediterranean geography creates a warm climate; with more than 300 sunny days per year, it's great for an outdoor holiday. Three universities and several French-language schools for international students produce a very strong student presence. Founded in 123 BCE by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus, Aix-en-Provence is a city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of the Bouches-du-Rhônes department situated on a plateau overlooking the Arc River. The city slopes gently from north to south, allowing you to see the limestone mountain range, the Montagne Sainte-Victoire to the east. Bicycle rental is available through V'Hello, which offers you free bicycles for trips under a half-hour and affordable hourly and daily rentals. You can explore many of the ancient roads radiating out from Aix throughout the surrounding countryside, with names in both Provençal and French. Where to stay

To explore the old town's shops, markets, and bookstores on foot, stay at one of the city's centrally located hotels. Just a short drive from this busy central area are a selection of luxurious villas, surrounded by formal gardens and private swimming pools. Though rather expensive, these elegant mansions provide a convenient base from which to explore the cultured area surrounding the city. For a cheaper alternative, look for private inns and B&Bs on the edge of town.
