Cours Mirabeau, Aix-en-Provence

A wide, bustling boulevard, Cours Mirabeau stretches 440 m (1,500 ft) long and 42 m (130 ft) wide. It has a number of cafes, some more than 100 years old, which were once visited by Nobel laureate Albert Camus. The street's wide sidewalks are planted with double rows of trees. Cool off at the fountains, the largest of which, La Rotonde, lies at one end of the street. The street divides Aix into two portions, the Quartier Mazarin, or the "new town," which extends to the south and west, and the Ville Comtale, the "old town," which lies to the north. Wander from the boulevard to the old town's wide streets and old French mansions dating from the 16th century. • The Mirabeau course has two sides, a nice side with its bars and restaurants with terraces and a more austere where settled many financial institutions.

  • The Cours Mirabeau is a broad boulevard that extends for about a half mile, dividing two very different sections of Aix-en-Provence. One is the Mazarin quarter, a rectilinear area of 17th- and 18th-ce...  more »
  • In season on Tuesday and Thursday, is not very easy to grow in the middle of all these displays of clothes from 100% Italian factories. But look rather the splendid mansions in yellow stone lining the course especially on the side right up. Do not also miss the all different fountains.

Where to stay in Aix-en-Provence

To explore the old town's shops, markets, and bookstores on foot, stay at one of the city's centrally located hotels. Just a short drive from this busy central area are a selection of luxurious villas, surrounded by formal gardens and private swimming pools. Though rather expensive, these elegant mansions provide a convenient base from which to explore the cultured area surrounding the city. For a cheaper alternative, look for private inns and B&Bs on the edge of town.
