Visit Turku Cathedral, the national shrine considered by many to be Finland's most important historical monument. This cathedral is the mother of the Lutheran Church of Finland dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Henry, Finland's first bishop. Visit the medieval structure, established in 1300, and see the immense work of renovations after the 1827 Great Fire of Turku. Tour the cathedral museum to learn about Finnish history since the 14th century. Listen to the church bells at noon as you walk along the Aura River. • The cathedral is beautiful and free to enter. I liked the children's exhibit of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. In addition there is a Cathedral Museum which displays some of the cathedral's...  more »
  • Worth seeing this for sure! It has incredible history and is so beautiful to see how it has been restored. Definitely a must see while in Turku.  more »
  • Beautiful building in the heart of the city. Park is relatively easy. There is nothing special about it, but the show is worth))

  • Went there for an organ concert, and the sound was amazing. Kudos to the organ and the player. The church is very large and very nice, but has a kind of a cold feeling to it. There is a receptionist at the front where you can pay 2 Euro to go see the church museum. To me, it was honestly not worth it, but if you like antique statues and silver, then it might be for you. It also shows how the church has evolved structurally.
  • Amazing Cathedral. Didn't get to go to the museum upstairs. However the Cathedral itself is amazing and beautiful.
  • This is the only medieval church in Finland. Be sure to visit while you are in Turku.
  • Nice from outside but inside nothing special.
  • A real cathedral, with an interesting museum upstairs. Great acoustics.

Where to stay in Turku

As Finland's historical capital and one of the centers of Finnish culture, Turku draws plenty of tourists and boasts a wide array of accommodations. Most of Turku's larger hotels and guesthouses sit within the historical old town, roughly between the harbor, the main train station, and the northern bank of the Aura River. Staying within this central district gives you easy access to most of Turku's main sights, putting you within walking distance of the famous cathedral and close to the fortress. Surrounding suburbs and more rural peninsular areas offer cheaper accommodation, but put you a little farther from the action. Budget travelers may want to book a hostel, which often put you in shared rooms but offer a decent location.
