Specialty Museum Museum
Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum features craftworks from pre-industrial times in an 18th-century open-air museum. When the Great Fire of 1827 destroyed 75 percent of the town, this area remained unharmed. Today you can wander through wooden homes decorated by colorful doors, windows, and chimneys. Note the grass on the roofs of some, while others feature barns and wooden stairs that lead to small attics. Inside the houses, you'll see old tools, furniture, and textiles. Throughout the site, artisans produce merchandise that you can purchase. Make Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum part of your personalized Turku itinerary using our Turku itinerary maker.

  • Interesting old buildings and history. Minus was that there was no area without ingestion of just outside, where we were served the old buns (not fresh but rather a few days old). Bad signposted to find there, got to ask us out.

  • A very interesting experience for people of all ages to see how Turku looked before the great fire and to get an insight into how people lived in Finland in the past. The area is surprisingly big taki...  more »
  • The area that is now the museum is a genuine ' common ' residential area that was spared by the fire of Turku 1827. An advantage if the visit can be a sunny and beautiful day. Then it's idyllic hiking in the old quarter and look into the houses. Gives a good insight into what it was like to live in that time-perhaps not so idyllic--crowded, low ceilings, beaten streets accommodation Staff are dressed in period-style dräker which makes a nice impression. There is also a shop, printing, shoe etc are organized various events on the Museum area, all year round.

  • One of my favorite museums. I also recommend trying their lunch (12-14 at Kisälli Cafe outside the gate). There's only one option every day but I've always been happy to get a traditional Finnish home-cooked meal in a very peaceful cafe. It includes home-made bread and salad. If someone in your group doesn't like the main dish, you can always fill your stomach with pancake
  • I really had fun here watching every one doing there handicrafts and seeing the old Finnish architecture. It was a blast to the past. However, there was a touring group in the first home we went in that plowed us down. No one was polite about it either or made an effort to let us through, so I was stuck in a corner for 10 minutes. I highly advise to avoid touring groups.I
  • Open air museum in an old Turku neighbourhood, with traditional wooden houses and people showing the art of handicraft. Really worth seeing. The cafe near the main entrance is also great.
  • It is a must-see place in Turku. We visited this museum in August 2016. It felt like we traveled back in time. We couldn't get enough of it.
  • It is wonderful place. It is easy to spend at least few hours there and not realise time runs so fast. Mostly wooden, old and cosy houses with real manufacturers working inside is great experience. It is also worth to visit small Caffè located few steps from the main gate.

Where to stay in Turku

As Finland's historical capital and one of the centers of Finnish culture, Turku draws plenty of tourists and boasts a wide array of accommodations. Most of Turku's larger hotels and guesthouses sit within the historical old town, roughly between the harbor, the main train station, and the northern bank of the Aura River. Staying within this central district gives you easy access to most of Turku's main sights, putting you within walking distance of the famous cathedral and close to the fortress. Surrounding suburbs and more rural peninsular areas offer cheaper accommodation, but put you a little farther from the action. Budget travelers may want to book a hostel, which often put you in shared rooms but offer a decent location.
