Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum, Turku

4.4
#2 of 13 in Museums in Turku
Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum features craftworks from pre-industrial times in an 18th-century open-air museum. When the Great Fire of 1827 destroyed 75 percent of the town, this area remained unharmed. Today you can wander through wooden homes decorated by colorful doors, windows, and chimneys. Note the grass on the roofs of some, while others feature barns and wooden stairs that lead to small attics. Inside the houses, you'll see old tools, furniture, and textiles. Throughout the site, artisans produce merchandise that you can purchase. To visit Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum and other attractions in Turku, use our Turku trip maker website .

  • This interactive museum represents the true Finnish culture. You can visit the homes of yesteryear, realize how they lived at the time ... everyone is friendly and looking forward to explain. Speak English perfectly

  • Nice old wooden houses and courtyards. I myself had the time to kullannut the memories and the Museum was not so interesting as I remembered. If possible then you should take part in a guided tour because the houses are not in order to guide the texts. The yards I would have longed for a better manicured flowers even in the old time, they certainly have not been to but ilahduttaisivat hard to Museum guests.

  • We spent hours exploring the fascinating shops, workshops, and living spaces in this gem of a living museum. Highly recommended, except for those who have difficulty walking. For them, alas, it is qui...  more »

  • Lots of friendly, patient, easy-going staff telling and showing how many different items were made 100-200 years ago in Finland. You get a feeling they would be ready to talk with you all day (at least in Finnish language). Toilets were modern, 200 year old ones were not in use anymore. Mind your head, people and doorways were not as tall as they are now. Natural lighting makes it quite dark in some of the houses.
  • We spent the whole day here, family with children aged 13 and 10. Started with excellent English language 45 minute tour. The day we went there were handicraft activities, pottery etc for the children which kept us interested all afternoon. A relaxing, interesting, memorable day for all of us.
  • One of my favorite museums. I also recommend trying their lunch (12-14 at Kisälli Cafe outside the gate). There's only one option every day but I've always been happy to get a traditional Finnish home-cooked meal in a very peaceful cafe. It includes home-made bread and salad. If someone in your group doesn't like the main dish, you can always fill your stomach with pancake
  • I figured we'll just go check another museum. Well, this certainly wasn't just another museum: it is a cluster of historical buildings, several blocks. There's something to see for hours. And lots of guides waiting for you!
  • I really had fun here watching every one doing there handicrafts and seeing the old Finnish architecture. It was a blast to the past. However, there was a touring group in the first home we went in that plowed us down. No one was polite about it either or made an effort to let us through, so I was stuck in a corner for 10 minutes. I highly advise to avoid touring groups.I

Where to stay in Turku

As Finland's historical capital and one of the centers of Finnish culture, Turku draws plenty of tourists and boasts a wide array of accommodations. Most of Turku's larger hotels and guesthouses sit within the historical old town, roughly between the harbor, the main train station, and the northern bank of the Aura River. Staying within this central district gives you easy access to most of Turku's main sights, putting you within walking distance of the famous cathedral and close to the fortress. Surrounding suburbs and more rural peninsular areas offer cheaper accommodation, but put you a little farther from the action. Budget travelers may want to book a hostel, which often put you in shared rooms but offer a decent location.
