Sitting at the mouth of the Aura River, Turku is one of Finland's quaintest and most historically rich towns. It is the country's oldest city, founded in the 13th century, and for several centuries it served as Finland's administrative center. Although many of its ancient buildings fell victim to The Great Fire of 1827, it boasts plenty of old and quirky charm. Its three universities help contribute to a lively bar, cafe, and dining scene. Museums, theatres, galleries, and a range of shopping opportunities provide plenty of activities for visitors. Arrange all the small, but important details of your Turku trip itinerary using our Finland trip itinerary planner.

Where to stay in Turku

As Finland's historical capital and one of the centers of Finnish culture, Turku draws plenty of tourists and boasts a wide array of accommodations. Most of Turku's larger hotels and guesthouses sit within the historical old town, roughly between the harbor, the main train station, and the northern bank of the Aura River. Staying within this central district gives you easy access to most of Turku's main sights, putting you within walking distance of the famous cathedral and close to the fortress. Surrounding suburbs and more rural peninsular areas offer cheaper accommodation, but put you a little farther from the action. Budget travelers may want to book a hostel, which often put you in shared rooms but offer a decent location.
