Admire the symbolist murals of Tampere Cathedral, a historical Lutheran church and the seat of the Diocese of Tampere. The murals and frescoes by Hugo Simberg are the church's highlight. Two of these were a source of controversy when they were first revealed: "The Garden of Death" represents a garden of dead souls harvesting flowers, and "The Wounded Angel" features a winged serpent in the center of the church's ceiling. The frescoes remain and today add to the ambiance of an otherwise modest church building. The artwork in the church, which was built between 1902 and 1907, serves as an example of the national Romantic movement in Finland.
