Tampere Cathedral, Tampere

Religious Site Tourist Spot
Admire the symbolist murals of Tampere Cathedral, a historical Lutheran church and the seat of the Diocese of Tampere. The murals and frescoes by Hugo Simberg are the church's highlight. Two of these were a source of controversy when they were first revealed: "The Garden of Death" represents a garden of dead souls harvesting flowers, and "The Wounded Angel" features a winged serpent in the center of the church's ceiling. The frescoes remain and today add to the ambiance of an otherwise modest church building. The artwork in the church, which was built between 1902 and 1907, serves as an example of the national Romantic movement in Finland. With our international travel planner, Tampere attractions like Tampere Cathedral can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Where to stay in Tampere

As Scandinavia's largest inland city, Tampere boasts all sorts of options when it comes to accommodations. Most of the city's modern hotels are clustered in the cosmopolitan area surrounding the main train station, within walking distance of many of the city's popular bars, shops, and restaurants. While they may lack character, the hotels themselves are reasonably priced for a large city. For more a more cost-effective option, opt for a smaller hotel or bed and breakfast in one of the quieter suburbs. To more closely experience Finland's natural wonders, check out the campsites just outside of town, which are significantly cheaper but with fewer amenities.

  • Beautiful cathedral. A bit touristy but still reverent!
  • Amazing architecture, love the contrast of colors red and gray of the stone
  • Tampere Cathedral is a must-visit place. Famous for its frescoes.
  • If you like or even if you don't like to visit churches, this one is worth to visit. During daytime the paintings inside are interesting and in the night time the outside looks picturesque.
  • Was elected the most beautiful church in Finland about a decade ago. Need to say no more.
