It has room for 1000 people.HistoryThe people of Savonlinna had to go to the Sääminki church when they didn't have their own church. In 1850 governor Aleksander Thesleff gave order to build a church in Savonniemi. The actual construction began in 1874.In 1896 the new Diocese of Savonlinna was founded and the Savonlinna church became a cathedral. The first bishop was Gustaf Johansson. It was restored in 1947–1948 by architect Bertel Liljeqvist. In 1990–1991, it was renovated by Ansu Ånström.

  • For those who have visits the cathedrals of Europe and been overwhelmed by their interiors, get back to simplicity with the churches in Finland. There is a beauty in their "plain" interiors.  more »
  • Easy to find, 5 to 10 min short walk from marketsquare. It looks better inside than outside, worth to see.  more »
  • Beautiful, inside and out. Inside is much more nicer than outside. There are very beautiful artworks. Really worth climbing. Liked it.  more »

  • The Cathedral was built in the second half of the 19 century. During the 2nd world war, was badly damaged by bombing, restored after the war. In the course of the restoration project was changed slightly (Cathedral rebuilt in more "simple" style with a minimum of external ornaments etc.) famous for her sharp tongue, local residents have nicknamed the Cathedral "Giraffe" believing that the high Bell Tower makes it look like it's dlinnoshee animal.

  • Traditional for all Finnish towns of Lutheran Church. In winter you can see inside the interiors only during service (Sunday at 10 a.m.). Well yes there is a huge body of the watch.

Where to stay in Savonlinna

Explore Savonlinna and the surrounding Lakeland district from one of the luxury hotels situated in the compact city center--most of which is concentrated on the city's two main islands. This way you can easily tour the town on foot and be within easy reach of the famous Olavinlinna castle. To enjoy the wild countryside and surrounding lakes, opt for a lodge or guesthouse outside of town. Though you'll definitely need access to a car in order to get around, these options provide cheaper rooms, a quaint setting, and sometimes feature bed and breakfast-style options for food.
