Built on an island connecting two lakes, Olavinlinna Castle stands as the northernmost stone fortress from the Middle Ages still intact. Founded in 1475 by Knight Erik Axelsson Tott on behalf of the Swedish Crown, it was constructed to protect the Savo region from Russian forces. Explore the stone castle, take in scenic views of the lakes, and visit the castle museum and Orthodox museum to learn more about the history of the structure and region. Dissapointed. Visited in Sept 2020, the towers were closed and part of the castle under renovation. Yet we had to pay full price and were told about the restrictions after the payment. Didn't feel... more »

Great medieval castle with interesting history between two northern powers, Sweden and Novgorod, later Russia. Definitely worth seeing, if visiting the city.
I was visiting Savonlinna Opera festival. The performance was talented, the area was nice, everything was working. Not an easy access area!
Visited Olavinlinna for our friends wedding and were super impressed by the fortress! Lots of interesting corners to explore!
If you are fan of Vikings then you should visit this castle. It is very old and historical. There is English guide available every hour who tells you details about every corner. European students can get discount on ticket price. It is a must visit place to know how the Sweden and Russia captured Finland and to know about the King who brought Christianity in Scandinavia. Stairs are bit small.
A very nice place to visit. One of the oldest existing buildings in Finland.
