The Northern Ostrobothnia museum is a museum of cultural history. This provincial museum focuses on the city of Oulu and its surrounding Northern Ostrobothnia region. The museum is situated in the Hupisaaret Islands park in the Myllytulli neighbourhood in Oulu, Finland. The museum was founded in 1896 and it was maintained by a museum society until 1969, when the ownership was handed over to the city of Oulu. Between the years 1911 - 1929 the museum operated in an old wooden villa, Villa Ainola, which was destroyed in a fire on July 9, 1929. Some of the collections of the museum were also destroyed. Soon after the fire the current museum building began construction on the site of the old villa. The new stone house was completed in 1931. The building was designed by Finnish architect Oiva Kallio. Oulu City Library was also located in the building until 1982.The basic exhibition extends in all the other floors of the building except the bottom floor, which is dedicated to the changing exhibitions and an exhibition for the children. The exhibition for the children is based on the Doghill books by Finnish children's author Mauri Kunnas. The ground floor hosts a large scale model of Oulu city centre in the year 1938 before the bombings of World War II.In addition to the main museum the Northern Ostrobothnia museum maintains Sailor's Home Museum in Pikisaari, Pateniemi Sawmill Museum and Turkansaari Open-air Museum.

  • The Museum houses extensive exhibitions of ice age to the present. For children, the dog k Division. A valuable place in the old building. Unfortunately, the building on their own wheelchairs, it is tricky. The House can be found in the Yes to the elevator (a little) but in the exhibition areas you go always through the charging of glass doors. By the way shows it is quite interesting. Children of the dog is already for many years, Hill passed through the Department, this could probably be a small update has already done, nykylapset will be happy to all kinds of activity on the Internet for a while so keep. With the kids while you are on the move always here had been so very quickly the last layers already tends them over to go..... On the plus side the Museum that the Museum will participate in different events so that the Museum is at the same time, free of charge. Currently, the Museum can also be found in a piece of Rosa's Code, esiteini and parents know what I mean;-)

  • An excellent cultural museum centring on Oulu and its surrounding area from the stone age to the present. Has a great model of Oulu in the mid 1930s when the city had only about 20000 people. If you have time to visit here, also go to the Art Museum on the other side of the park. Well worth a visit.
  • A big exhibit of Finnish history of the region. From the stone age to the present. A view of the way of life of the region and hoe Oulu came to be. Truly an educational tour and a must visit for all history-loving tourist and locals alike.
  • Covers the history of Oulu and Northern Ostrobothnia quite nicely. Quite a lot of period era objects on display. Kids (at least Finnish ones) will most likely like the stuff on show just for them. The huge miniature of Oulu in 1938 is quite a sight, and very interesting even for people born and raised in Oulu (like me). Tickets are currently 6/4 euros but for tourists, especially those with children, I'd suggest getting the Luuppi combination ticket so you can visit this museum, the Oulu Museum of Art and Tietomaa for a discounted price. As they all are within walking distance, you can basically cover them all in one day.
  • Very informative, full history some national topics but a pretty decent account of Oulu and the surrounding region The huge diorama of how Oulu looked in 1938 there was only 20,000 people Very worth a look, the creative room was eye opening
  • It's a museum about history - for me it was interesting and boring at the same time, but I learned something about the place I'm visiting!
