Kvarken Archipelago, Finland

(5/5 based on 10+ reviews on the web)
Kvarken is the narrow region in the Gulf of Bothnia separating the Bothnian Bay from the Bothnian Sea. The distance from Swedish mainland to Finnish mainland is around 80km while the distance between the outmost islands is only 25km. The water depth in the Kvarken region is only around 25m. The region also has an unusual rate of land rising at about 10mm a year.On the Finnish side of Kvarken, there is a large archipelago, the Kvarken Archipelago, which includes the large islands Replot, Björkö and a large number of smaller islands. Most of it is belongs to the municipality of Korsholm. Most of the small islands are inhabited. The archipelago is smaller on the Swedish side of the region, and the islands have much steeper shores. The Kvarken region was historically important also, because mail was delivered across Kvarken when the sea was completely frozen from the Swedish to the Finnish coast. This mail route was used frequently during the period of Swedish rule.In the group of islands in the “middle” of the Kvarken region, in Swedish called Valsörarna - Finnish Valassaaret, is a 36m lighthouse designed by Henry LePaute who worked for Gustave Eiffel's engineering bureau. The structural similarity between the lighthouse and the Eiffel tower is quite obvious. The lighthouse is now automated as are most lighthouses in Finland.

  • Observation tower allows to enjoy the beautiful panorama that offers this place classified world heritage of Unesco. We got there at different times of the day to admire the light and this until the setting sun which never sets! It is also a place where you can watch birds.

  • The area is great for a quiet family holiday in beautiful surroundings. I highly recommend that you rent a cabin in the area to get the best experience possible. There are many opportunities to walks on your own, or boat trips with a guide in the area.

  • I do not know what do you think are the sea Novia University of applied sciences by the throat but I went out there with a German girl with a friend and we at least were correctable. In fact, I now remember vividly during the ice age, but the background of the jäämassojen movements are therefore created a surprisingly balanced the island strings, and moreeneja. When you see a queue of rock formations, time after time, you begin to understand how unique this island of the Horde is. On the island there are (at least) the opportunity to bike rentals, boating, boat trips, e.g. 5-7 h duration, cafes and restaurants, hiking trails (a surprising number of mosquitoes and that is not otherwise, warnings given, if you are allergic then you should choose the year pretty well if the hiking of interest) and at least one of the grocery store. Therefore, things to see, things to do and services can be found-even in a UNESCO-protected item.
