Kerimaki Church, Kerimaki
(4.5/5 based on 80 reviews on the web)
With an idea to gather all the townsfolk at once, the Christian community built Kerimaki Church, reputed to be one of the largest wooden objects in the world at one time. Due to its scope and complexity, this project required the participation of every single man aged 15 to 60 at the time of construction in the mid-1800s. Once it was completed in 1847, the structure was so illogically large that authorities investigated the possibility that builders got confused between centimeters and inches, which was disproved. With a capacity to host 5,000 people, this church features remarkably detailed woodwork and lavish galleries, filled with colored lanterns. View its spacious insides and the 37 m (121 ft) tall dome. Concerts and events are often held inside. Make Kerimaki Church a part of your Kerimaki vacation plans using our Kerimaki holiday planner.

  • Twenty minutes by car from Savonlinna and you find yourself in the town of Kerimäki, where is the largest wooden church in the world. The population of Kerimäki on official data approximately 5400 people and the church building can accommodate about 5000. And this is not due to the fact that the inhabitants of such all devout and so that drawings made in centimeters, builders have implemented in inches, i.e. increased in 2.5 times. Error! But such a church, found nowhere else in the world. On the Hill, and about 40 meters in height, Bell makes a lasting impression. Cap Bell Tower complex milled boulders, natural color that blends with light brown façade with a white trim. Even the inside failed to enter (the Church to preserve the tree closed in winter) has not stopped to enjoy her visit.

  • Beautiful old wooden church that worth to drop by this quite town . It was the largest wooden church in Finland. Located 5-10min walk at the main town.
  • Now closed for renovation. Even red tape cordoned off. Maybe in the fall only? But around resemble very nice. The Bell Tower is closed too. But without ribbons.
