Sampo Icebreaker, Kemi

4.5
#Must See
Although Sampo Icebreaker began its career as a tourism vessel in the 1980s, it continues to carry out its practical purpose. While the ship transports you along the coast, it breaks up ice in the water so other transport and trade vessels can pass. The ship's main port is Kemi, where it resides during the summer months, but in winter it is mostly on the water giving tours of the Gulf of Bothnia. The tour includes a guided walkthrough of the ship with the chance to explore the vessel's engineering. You'll have the opportunity to take a dip in the freezing water after your guide gives you a rescue suit that will protect you from the cold. Book tickets ahead of time on the attraction's website or purchase cruise tickets from the home port in Kemi. Tour options include a day, brunch, or afternoon tour, each of which takes a few hours.  Plan to visit Sampo Icebreaker and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Kemi attractions using our Kemi trip planning app .

  • We boarded at twelve and right away we were greeted by the crew very kind which we did visit the premises of the ship. After a short break, we went to the restaurant and we gustoto a great salmon soup, dessert and coffee. Then finally the awaited bath Arctic! After being academic in a red suit we were helped to immerse ourselves in icy Arctic sea. It was hilarious and quite unique. I recommend everyone to try this nice attraction.

  • I went with a tour group on the icebreaker, not knowing what to expect, we were just told it was a must-see. I enjoyed it far more then I thought. The sound and the sight of these huge slabs of ice, b...  more »
  • Had a morning cruise with this historic formerly state owned ice-breaker. Excellent tour in the ship, tasty breakfast and loved to watch fellow visitors enjoying the swim in icy sea. This is something...  more »

  • The visit at the old icebreaker is a "must-have". After a great soup you will get a guided tour through the ship. You will see everything ...from the bridge to the engine room and much more. The very friendly guides will answer all your questions very professionally. The highlight of the tour is that you can, if you wish, make an ice-water float in a dry-suit. I recommend to do this...this is an "unforgettable memory"...five of five stars
  • A fantastic trip on a 1961 icebreaker fully decorated in the 60's. Moving along the frozen Baltic Sea is a one in a lifetime experience along with actually WALKING on the frozen sea and FLOATING on the cold waters dressed in comfy dry floating gear supported by nice guides. Careful only with slippery decks! It can be hazardous with large space in railings. There should be a net protection to prevent falling offboard, which would be utterly horrendous!
  • Extraordinary and unique experience. There is no much places you may discover authentic Arctic and even feel a little like Amundsen. On real but tiny ice breaker you go into the sea. Eventually you may even swim in the frozen water like a seal.
  • One of the best experiences I've ever had.
  • Super, experience like no other. This is must for winter.
