Although Sampo Icebreaker began its career as a tourism vessel in the 1980s, it continues to carry out its practical purpose. While the ship transports you along the coast, it breaks up ice in the water so other transport and trade vessels can pass. The ship's main port is Kemi, where it resides during the summer months, but in winter it is mostly on the water giving tours of the Gulf of Bothnia. The tour includes a guided walkthrough of the ship with the chance to explore the vessel's engineering. You'll have the opportunity to take a dip in the freezing water after your guide gives you a rescue suit that will protect you from the cold. Book tickets ahead of time on the attraction's website or purchase cruise tickets from the home port in Kemi. Tour options include a day, brunch, or afternoon tour, each of which takes a few hours. Sampo Icebreaker Reviews
This was one of the best things we did in Finland! The staff and the crew were fantastic. We got to tour the boat, had lunch and then did the ice float. Pardon the pun - but one of the coolest things ... more »

The Sampo Icereaker is a good experience if you are in Kemi. It is a pretty old ship, 1961 if i am not mistaken. It was a first time for us to be on a Icebreaker, so it was fun and lunch is pretty goo... more »
The visit at the old icebreaker is a "must-have". After a great soup you will get a guided tour through the ship. You will see everything ...from the bridge to the engine room and much more. The very friendly guides will answer all your questions very professionally. The highlight of the tour is that you can, if you wish, make an ice-water float in a dry-suit. I recommend to do this...this is an "unforgettable memory"...five of five stars
One of the most fun and unique experiences in Finland. Do the snowmobile tour first and the ship will pick you up in the middle of the frozen Baltic sea! Tour of the ship was interesting and informative, but the food was just "meh". The meal didn't take away from the experience, though. The artic plunge at the end was incredible fun!
A fantastic trip on a 1961 icebreaker fully decorated in the 60's. Moving along the frozen Baltic Sea is a one in a lifetime experience along with actually WALKING on the frozen sea and FLOATING on the cold waters dressed in comfy dry floating gear supported by nice guides. Careful only with slippery decks! It can be hazardous with large space in railings. There should be a net protection to prevent falling offboard, which would be utterly horrendous!
Unless going to the onboard restaurant or on a sailing trip, there is no other option available to visit the icebreaker. On the closest dock there is a building where a short banner expo with pictures and infos about the history of this mythical icebreaker would be useful and interesting to organize for the last moment tourists arriving in the area. Otherwise a nice ship to know or visit.
Nice tour with lot of atractions as swiming in the ice. Very cold so take very warm things with you
