Siida, Inari

4.4
#1 of 13 in Things to do in Inari
The historic pasture of the Siida feeds herds of Sami reindeer native to the area. The Sami are an ancient community of people who maintain the tradition of nomadic reindeer herding through the pastureland. Their practices are protected by law and so are the lands through which they move the reindeer herds. The attraction serves as a meeting place to learn about the arctic cultures whose way of life depends of the migrating herds. The National Museum of the Finnish Sámi and the Nature Centre of Metsähallitu work together to preserve the natural surroundings and culture at the site. An open-air museum as well as indoor exhibits display the artifacts of everyday life, such as textiles, clothing, and cooking utensils. At the on-site restaurant, sample the local mountain berries and reindeer meat--staples of the Sami diet. • Passing on a trip organized for the end of the year, we took advantage of the visit to this museum to deepen our knowledge about Finnish culture. A halt if one is passing in the sector

  • A dazzling exhibition/museum. For young and old. Both inside and outside very educational. There are lots of things to find out about the history of Scandinavia in itself as well as the original inhabitants of this beautiful, rugged environment! In short, very worth it.

  • Small but very nice culture center / museum, relatively near the main road. I recommend a visit for any one that's passing by - then again I am a bit biased. So the rating might depend on your personal interest. =)
  • I loved this place, I learned so much about Finland. The gift shop is cool and typical simple good Finland food in the cafeteria.
  • This is the most northern Museum of World. Siida museum has some great collection of Lapland history, unbelievable picture art and nice souvenir shop. I have visited this place during our journey of Lapland. I have bought 3 Reindeer toys (each cost 13 Euro) and 5 pens (2 Euro each) from there. Expensive but the quality of product is truly fantastic and 100% authentic. Highly Recommend!!!
  • Very interesting museum. The outdoor exhibits were especially neat.
  • Beautiful setting in the forest and very informative about the Sami culture. Our kids (1 and 6) loved it. Minus for not having any live reindeer.
