Siida, Inari

Categories: Specialty Museums, Museums
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web
The historic pasture of the Siida feeds herds of Sami reindeer native to the area. The Sami are an ancient community of people who maintain the tradition of nomadic reindeer herding through the pastureland. Their practices are protected by law and so are the lands through which they move the reindeer herds. The attraction serves as a meeting place to learn about the arctic cultures whose way of life depends of the migrating herds. The National Museum of the Finnish Sámi and the Nature Centre of Metsähallitu work together to preserve the natural surroundings and culture at the site. An open-air museum as well as indoor exhibits display the artifacts of everyday life, such as textiles, clothing, and cooking utensils. At the on-site restaurant, sample the local mountain berries and reindeer meat--staples of the Sami diet. A visit to Siida represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Inari itinerary planner to plot your vacation.

  • Mostly boards with history and culture of Sami. For an average tourist it might be a little bit too informative. Also the exhibition boards were really well thought (e.g. they labelled pictures with numbers 1,2,3... and then the whole section of descriptions is below - instead of one description immediately next to each photo) Also there weren't too many exhibits inside. Given all these the entrance fee is a bit too high.
  • Simply outstanding place.
  • Must go when visiting Inari. Lots of knowledge and history about Sami and arctic area, etc.
  • Excellent museum. Very informative and professional!
  • Show is good. The movie in the museum is poor as only a few aurora photos have been shown and then nothing.
