#4 of 1,667 in Things to do in Finland
The largest Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe, Uspenskin Cathedral (Uspenskin Katedraali) stands as a symbol of Russian influence in Finland's history. Designed by architect Aleksey Gornostayev during Russian rule of the region in the 19th century, this Eastern Orthodox church was completed in 1868. Visit the popular Helsinki landmark, note its traditional Russian design, and then enjoy the view of the city from this scenic hilltop. Take time to inspect the structure's ornate interior, domed ceilings, and crypt chapel, as well as several historically and artistically important icons, including St. Nicolas the Wonder Maker and Theotokos of Kozeltshan. • Uspenskin Cathedral is a historic site with beautiful views. Upon arrival by tram, bus or walk (depends where you are) I would visit the open air market where you can purchase some Finnish souvenirs o...  more »
  • While it is beautiful from outside, it is quite average from outside. Compared to other cathedrals in rest of Europe, it is a very underwhelming experience.  more »

  • A Helsinki landmark, worth visiting regardless of if it is open or closed. The brick building is in traditional Russian church. There are images outside the church you can check out. Walk around, to the back as well, to see the different architectural elements. There is a great view of Helsinki from the front of the church as well.
  • We didn't go during opening hours so we could just see it from the outside. Still very majestic, make sure you go on a day it's open. (Not Mondays)
  • There was a beautiful service going on - - Divine Liturgy. Angelic voices! Beautiful Russian Orthodox style architecture and beautiful icons.
  • Very cool cathedral both outside and in. Definitely worth the visit as it's free and centrally located.
  • Very nice architecture and excellent preservation work. A must stop for spirituality or just to view the beautiful architecture design that is unique to Helsinki as an icon.
