Religious Site Tourist Spot
The largest Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe, Uspenskin Cathedral (Uspenskin Katedraali) stands as a symbol of Russian influence in Finland's history. Designed by architect Aleksey Gornostayev during Russian rule of the region in the 19th century, this Eastern Orthodox church was completed in 1868. Visit the popular Helsinki landmark, note its traditional Russian design, and then enjoy the view of the city from this scenic hilltop. Take time to inspect the structure's ornate interior, domed ceilings, and crypt chapel, as well as several historically and artistically important icons, including St. Nicolas the Wonder Maker and Theotokos of Kozeltshan. • It is the largest Orthodox Cathedral outside Russia. It is impressive and it dominates the Bay of Helsinki. From here you can take wonderful pictures and also visit the Interior, with its frescoed ceilings and decorated with gold.

  • Russia-Orthodox large church stands on a rock by the sea, a fine brick. The Church out of the hotel, take 15 minutes, serried come we hoped. Of course also can visit free of charge. Views of the city of Helsinki and the view from the Hill.

  • This is a stunning Orthodox cathedral, but it is difficult to get round as there are so many tourists at any one time. So not a place for quiet contemplation.  more »

  • Absolutely spectacular structure. I haven't been in awe of a building quite as much as I was here. Built with brick and towering into the skies. I was blown away. Definitely a great place to visit and not far from the docks and Senate Square.
  • Beautiful Finnish church nested on a small hill. Classic 'Baltic' orthodox.
  • It was a cathedral on the top of a hill, needs a bit climbing. Inside you are not allowed to talk and make shot. What's more strange - the altars was far away from the visitors - being encircled with a rope and you can look at it from 20 min only, a kind of museum.
  • Nice looking cathedral, red color is nice contrast to blue sky. Another beautiful place.
  • Door handle does not twist. Need new door handles. The last thing I needed with my face frozen, hands frost-bitten was to be humiliated at a house of God. To my shock and horror I could not twist nor turn the door handle only to realise the door handle only pulled. I work in user experience design and will tell you this for free, that is bad UX. Once I finally breached the defences, it was lovely inside. Would've given 5/7 had it been for better door handles.

Where to stay in Helsinki

Set yourself up with easy access to many of Helsinki's most popular tourist sites by staying in the city's bustling and modern center. You'll find that the area is packed full of shops, restaurants, and bars, plus it's conveniently close to both the city's main train station and energetic waterfront. Though there's certainly a range of options when it comes to big-name hotel chains and upscale accommodation, prices are generally higher throughout most of the center, so consider staying at a hostel to cut down on costs. Hostels typically offer a solid location in or near the city center at a fraction of the cost of a big chain.
