Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki

4.4
#4 of 1,392 in Things to do in Finland
The largest Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe, Uspenski Cathedral stands as a symbol of Russian influence in Finland's history. Designed by architect Aleksey Gornostayev during Russian rule of the region in the 19th century, this Eastern Orthodox church was completed in 1868. Visit the popular Helsinki landmark, note its traditional Russian design, and then enjoy the view of the city from this scenic hilltop. Take time to inspect the structure's ornate interior, domed ceilings, and crypt chapel, as well as several historically and artistically important icons, including St. Nicolas the Wonder Maker and Theotokos of Kozeltshan. • More great and look great, but some of them said. Is not so spacious, high ceilings and ornate.

  • The cathedral was beautiful inside and out. Although it was busy and crowded, it was well worth the effort to visit. The inside of the cathedral was grand. I would go again if given the opportunity.  more »

  • You can see the Cathedral from the city centre you will see the "gold shinning" from the Helsinki museum is 10min walking or you can wait from one of the trams. Unfortunately on Sundays they are only open from 12h to 15h so didn't went inside. Anyway if you need to wait for Museums to open (on Sundays not before 10h) you can go there and take nice pics of Helsinki. Near the Cathedral is the Love Bridge. From there to Market Square 5min (or less).
  • What a wonderful and beautiful place to see such a beautiful architecture with beautiful colors and historical Cathedral that gives a beautiful view on Helsinki with a small garden where you can stay and have a beer with friends
  • Ortodox Cathedral completely different from what I am used. Really different and beautiful. Not that big but is located in a higher place that seems imperial.
  • Absolutely spectacular structure. I haven't been in awe of a building quite as much as I was here. Built with brick and towering into the skies. I was blown away. Definitely a great place to visit and not far from the docks and Senate Square.
  • One of the most beautiful churches that I have ever been to.

Where to stay in Helsinki

Set yourself up with easy access to many of Helsinki's most popular tourist sites by staying in the city's bustling and modern center. You'll find that the area is packed full of shops, restaurants, and bars, plus it's conveniently close to both the city's main train station and energetic waterfront. Though there's certainly a range of options when it comes to big-name hotel chains and upscale accommodation, prices are generally higher throughout most of the center, so consider staying at a hostel to cut down on costs. Hostels typically offer a solid location in or near the city center at a fraction of the cost of a big chain.
