Temppeliaukion Church, Helsinki

4.3
Known for its striking copper dome, Temppeliaukion Church has been carved from rock in the heart of the city. Designed by siblings Tim and Tuomo Suomalainen and finished in 1969, this distinctive Lutheran church is directly excavated into rock. Explore the church's interior, which consists of rock and marble walls, with the shining copper dome supported by concrete beams at the top of the structure. Note the light shining in through the skylight on what is commonly called the Church of Rock. Take time to listen to the acoustics, made possible by the church's exposed walls. Temppeliaukion Church is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Helsinki Edition.

  • Very interesting church made in granite rock with copper roof. Very crowded. Great place for photos. Need to walk 2-3 blocks to get to it. Only need to spend about 15 minutes there. No restrooms for t...  more »
  • Ok it's cool to see a church built into rock but, that's about it. There is nothing extraordinary other than the rock part. And you have to pay 3 euro or so to enter. Once inside it maybe would be a 1...  more »
  • Dug out of the rock this is a lovely church and the colours of the rock and the interplay of light on the copper ceiling are quite something. However, it could be a spaceship nesting in the middle of ...  more »

  • Here is an extra star 🌟 it is sublime. An architectural inspiration. Stone, wood, copper, all used to stunning effect. Our visit was made special by an interpretive dance/throat signing/harmonica accompanied performance that even the staff couldn't explain.
  • Very interesting and unique church carved out of a huge boulder. Most impressive is the huge floating circular dome made of 13 miles of copper ribbon!
  • I loved it. I was lucky to be there at the hours when it was free for visitors. It is worth the visit definitely.
  • If you are the one who loves art and nature then this place could be a fantastic place to visit. Located in a very silent neighborhood in kamppi, the church is a Good place to contemplate or having a daily journey inside to get rid of daily life pressure. If you are lucky then you can enjoy some piano performances!!
  • An unconventional churches to see. It's built into a massive rock and presumably has good acoustics.

Where to stay in Helsinki

Set yourself up with easy access to many of Helsinki's most popular tourist sites by staying in the city's bustling and modern center. You'll find that the area is packed full of shops, restaurants, and bars, plus it's conveniently close to both the city's main train station and energetic waterfront. Though there's certainly a range of options when it comes to big-name hotel chains and upscale accommodation, prices are generally higher throughout most of the center, so consider staying at a hostel to cut down on costs. Hostels typically offer a solid location in or near the city center at a fraction of the cost of a big chain.
