Known for its striking copper dome, Temppeliaukio Church has been carved from rock in the heart of the city. Designed by siblings Tim and Tuomo Suomalainen and finished in 1969, this distinctive Lutheran church is directly excavated into rock. Explore the church's interior, which consists of rock and marble walls, with the shining copper dome supported by concrete beams at the top of the structure. Note the light shining in through the skylight on what is commonly called the Church of Rock. Take time to listen to the acoustics, made possible by the church's exposed walls. Temppeliaukio Church is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , world travel planner Edition.

  • Fascinating architectural gem built into a hillside. You'll be lulled into a meditative state and feel wrapped in the arms of mother earth. There was music playing and folks just sitting quietly...

  • An interesting place, we went as part of a tour. Maybe include it in a visit to several places. No facilities in the church, nearest were a fair walk away.

  • I understand Lutheran churches are not particularly ornate but I'd hardly sell this as something to see for visitors. Helsinki has many more interesting options. Skip this as it is quite a ways off....  more

  • This is a cool church! Neat idea to build it into the rock. Great symbolism there. The architecture and build out is really cool! The ceiling is sweet. Admission was around $6 USD. Always find it odd to charge admission vs request for donations as a church, it does make me question the reason for building it…but obviously there are operating costs. I’d say it was still worth the expense because the building is that unique. There are multiple souvenir shops on the wall up the hill.
  • Not sure what I expected, but was vaguely disappointed. It is pretty utilitarian and being carved out of rock had quite a chill feeling. Worth a visit but don't believe all the hype.
  • It's a very interesting concept to built a church in the rocks. The copper dome is really amazing. In general I liked the feeling of being in the church but I would prefer the music to play louder. I would definitely recommend a visit.
  • Well worth a visit. €4 entrance for adults which can include the occasional daytime concerts. Spectacular setting and the usual calm sanctuary of a church.
  • A church made of stone and metal, very suggestive, incredible acustic for concerts. When I entered the church, a chorus was practicing so I enjoyed live music! Entrance is not free of charge.
