Suomenlinna Church (Suomenlinnan kirkko), Helsinki

3.6
The Suomenlinna Church in Helsinki, Finland was built as an Eastern Orthodox garrison church for the Russian troops of Suomenlinna sea fortress in 1854, and originally had five onion domes. The church was designed by Konstantin Thon, an official architect of Imperial Russia during the reign of czar Nicholas I, and whose major works include the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Grand Kremlin Palace, and the Kremlin Armoury in Moscow. The fortress comprises five islands joined together by bridges, and the church is the central feature on the island of Iso Mustasaari surrounded on all sides by fortification works. Before the design and construction of the Orthodox church plans were drawn up in the 1820s by architect Carl Ludvig Engel for a church on the same site, but designed in the neoclassical style, in keeping with the rest of buildings in the fortress and the buildings of the capital, Helsinki. The Orthodox church was converted into an Evangelical Lutheran church during the 1920s. Its extensive iconography was warehoused by the city of Helsinki, but their current whereabouts are unknown. Today its central dome doubles as a lighthouse making it one of only a few churches in the world that double as a lighthouse. The signal blink is the Morse code for the letter "H" for Helsinki. It is a very popular wedding church and one of the first landmarks for people arriving in Helsinki by sea.

  • The Church is across from the city of Helsinki with ferry crossing for 15 minutes. From the Harbour, Or we can walk 500 metres to the Church. Beautiful scenery for photos for the tourists.

  • In situated the middle of the main path building with interesting history. When it gets dark you can see the nautical signal fire comes super from the top of the glass.

  • Very beautiful church on the fortress island. Worth a visit along with the fortress anyway. Especially the large Bell on the side of the Church is worth a look.

  • Beautiful and simple church that functions as a light house too
  • The entire island is neat, but the church and its location are quite amazing. It really stands out in this location. What a great place.
  • Nice church, often closed:-(
  • Really different "fence" around this small island church.
  • Lovely church that is also the lighthouse of Suomenlinna island

Where to stay in Helsinki

Set yourself up with easy access to many of Helsinki's most popular tourist sites by staying in the city's bustling and modern center. You'll find that the area is packed full of shops, restaurants, and bars, plus it's conveniently close to both the city's main train station and energetic waterfront. Though there's certainly a range of options when it comes to big-name hotel chains and upscale accommodation, prices are generally higher throughout most of the center, so consider staying at a hostel to cut down on costs. Hostels typically offer a solid location in or near the city center at a fraction of the cost of a big chain.
