Senate Square, Helsinki
(4.3/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web)
The Helsinki Cathedral, Government Palace, National Library of Finland, and main University of Helsinki building surround Senate Square and make up a collective vision of neoclassical design. This historical square boasts the architectural influence of Carl Ludvig Engel and is home to the oldest building in the city center, Sederholm House, built in 1757. Stroll the square to view these stately structures, stopping to take a seat on the cathedral's stairs and to examine the statue of Alexander II, a monument of Russian expansionism in Finland. The square hosts many events, including concerts and art exhibits. • Senate Square and its surroundings form a unique example of Neoclassical architecture. The square is dominated by four buildings designed between 1822 and 1852: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Pala...  more »
  • Despite the Helsinki Cathedral itself was not part of the trip that I have hit more, I must say that the square that surrounds it is just superb. And I am not referring only to his Majesty (which fills our hearts with a thousand emotions and feelings, unlike the empty silence of the Cathedral). The Senate square is full of lights, sounds, a history that continues to live in the faces of those who cross this timeless place. You can't help but be drawn into strong declarations of great beauty and, at the same time, by pure simplicity which reigns sovereign collection among those stones, those steps and those columns. My tour dates back to August of 2016: I remember clearly that even on rainy days the whole square was bathed in a special atmosphere, especially between silence and noise, which despite the gray clouds made it look full of an unreal light. On a sunny day, instead, I did something rather economy: I took a nice ice cream and I went to enjoy it on the steps of the Cathedral. From there shone like a wave Helsinki marina in summer. The music of the buskers and the scent of the flowers was going through the whole square as a slight whisper: everything was lovely, touching, grazed by the peace and sunshine. One of the highlights of my trip to Finland, which will keep joyfully.

  • This was extremely pretty. We also enjoyed the free museum across the road with somewhere warm for our child to play.

  • A must-see when visiting Helsinki. Enjoy some sun in the summer while sitting on the church steps, or get into the Christmas spirit in December at the Christmas market. There's usually something to see/do here whatever time of year it may be!
  • Best seen on a clear day. Go to the top of the stair and drink a good cup of coffe in Peace.
  • Beautiful square with a cathedral on top. While the square itself doesn't have much, it's still a beautiful cathedral a top of the stairs which makes the climb worth it to see. Lots of tour buses which makes it crowded here. But you don't really need more than 20 minutes to see it. The surrounding shops are nice as it is located in the design district.
  • Nice square. Very popular with tourists. Expect lots of buses
  • Awesome place. At special events, lights and everything make you feel heaven.
