Visit World Heritage Site Sea Fortress Suomenlinna to see a sea fortress built on a collection of six islands. This ruggedly beautiful spot is a favorite among both locals and tourists. The fortress was built in 1748 and inhabited by Swedes and Russians until 1918, when it became a part of independent Finland. View the impressive fortified structure, constructed by the Swedish crown to withstand attacks from 18th-century Russia (who eventually overtook the islands in 1808). Nowadays the site supports a town with civilian inhabitants and draws visitors from the mainland of Finland. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Helsinki holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Sea Fortress Suomenlinna and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Free to visit via the ferry if you have a travel pass for the transportation in Helsinki. I visited for a couple hours and walked around. There was a lot more to see, and I will probably be back to visit more when there is warmer weather. It is very quiet and peaceful and there is a lot of history to uncover by visiting there.

this was a very cool place to go, and there is a grocery store if you need anything. Lots of cave type passageways and just a very interesting place to walk around.

The island is very well taken care of and it is a pleasant place to stroll, but it is also quite artificially prepared for the tourist. It is not a spontaneous place. However, it is worth going for the quietness of the place and for the boat ride.

Beautiful island, many things to see, I recommend spending at least 5-6 hours here to truly appreciate the cultural areas. Great spots for picture taking, island merging with the sea alongside forts and cannons.
