Visit World Heritage Site Sea Fortress Suomenlinna to see a sea fortress built on a collection of six islands. This ruggedly beautiful spot is a favorite among both locals and tourists. The fortress was built in 1748 and inhabited by Swedes and Russians until 1918, when it became a part of independent Finland. View the impressive fortified structure, constructed by the Swedish crown to withstand attacks from 18th-century Russia (who eventually overtook the islands in 1808). Nowadays the site supports a town with civilian inhabitants and draws visitors from the mainland of Finland. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Helsinki holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Sea Fortress Suomenlinna and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • We were underwhelmed by the experience. The ferry over was quick and easy. The site itself had some interesting things. We tried to follow the blue route walking path but get turned around many...

  • What a great place to be for someone who loves history, wants to take a nice hike and get away from the crowds, or someone who just loves history.

  • A must for those in Helsinki who enjoy the outdoors! It's a beautiful boat ride over and then there are lots of beautiful spots for picnics or restaurants for lunch. From the ferry I recommended the walk to the other end of the second island.
  • It is charming and great place to visit while you are in Helsinki. Regular public transport ticket is valid for boat riding. Just be prepared that here is few degrees lower temperature and wind is stronger than in city.
  • So interesting and wonderful World Heritage sight. Beautiful buildings and fascinating museums. A lot of walking over cobblestones is the only downside. Lovely 15 min ferry ride across to the island. Definitely worth seeing.
  • Fort me it is just a bunch of old houses on several small islands. But the place is great for a picnic with bubbles, cheese and biscuits. Due boaters there are many good mooring places. It is quiet after closing time
  • This was a really cool experience for me, went with a friend during the week and the best part the transportation was included in my 5 day city transport pass. One of the coolest things on the island to see are the cannons, the shipyard and the surrounding views. It's just a really nice place for a chill walk.
